SAFE CONTAINER LOADING PRACTICES & HEAVY VEHICLE SAFETY

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA), Container Transport Alliance Australia (CTAA), and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA), have partnered with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) to create the Safe Container Loading Practices & Heavy Vehicle Safety campaign.

The campaign is part of the NHVR Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI) program funded by the Commonwealth Government. It has also attracted the support of ICHCA Australia, and global organisations such as the Global Shippers Forum (GSF) and the World's leading transport and logistics insurer, TT Club.

Michael McCormack - Deputy Prime Minister

Sal Petroccitto - NHVR CEO

The campaign provides a FREE online Safe Container Loading Practices & Heavy Vehicle Safety course, complimented by a FREE webinar series with presentations from experts in their field.

This initiative seeks to raise awareness of best practice in container loading and cargo restraint, and the potential legal, safety and commercial consequences of poorly restrained and unevenly weight distributed cargo inside shipping containers, transported by sea or on land.

This educational campaign will be of benefit to all those involved in the supply chain including importers, exporters, container packers (in Australia and overseas), unpackers, freight forwarders / customs brokers, transport operators, stevedores and all others involved in the safe movement of containerised cargo.

RESOURCES

A useful "Container Packing Checklist" launched by leading international organisations has been endorsed for use in Australia. Importers and exporters are encouraged to adopt the Checklist into operational practice and ensure that it is circulated for use to their container packers in Australia and overseas.

Other essential resources and best practice guidelines on the safe transport and handling of containerised cargo, including access to the IMO "Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units" (CTU Code), can be downloaded HERE.
