Major equipment shortage impacting agri-exporters

A shortage of food grade 20 foot containers available for export has deep cost and operational impacts, coming off a record grain harvest.

The Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) has received urgent feedback from our agri-exporter members regarding a major shortage of equipment in the availability of food quality 20ft empty containers for export. The perceived shortage appears to have affected all the major shipping lines and is particularly acute in Brisbane and Adelaide. We understand that some grain shippers have now shifted away from Brisbane due to the shortages as the supply of equipment remains in high deficit. This situation will be amplified by the late chickpea season and Chinese New Year, where we don't expect the imbalance to correct for another 4-6 weeks, at the very least ... read more

BORDER & BIOSECURITY

Public warned about deadly Fantasy drug hidden in beauty products

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has received a request for assistance from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in circulating a bulletin to members as a matter of  community safety. There has been a steep increase in illegal importations of gammabutyrolactone (GBL), a border controlled drug commonly referred to as 'Fantasy' and 'Coma in a bottle'.  In recent seizures, the drug has been found concealed within commercial beauty products imported from China and Korea.

IMPLEMENTATION ISSUES

AUSTRALIA - As outlined in last week's report, delays in receiving updated files has caused issues for customs brokers and importers, compounded by similar delays experienced by software developers in receiving data from the Department of immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).

We greatly appreciate the support of CI&SC, DIBP policy and Australian Border Force compliance officers in assisting with remedial action. A summary of issues is available HERE.

Members experiencing any residual issues should contact me direct at pzalai@FTAlliance.com.au

MANAGING BUSINESS RISKS

Now more than ever it is essential for freight forwarders to safeguard against credit risks.

The dramatic collapse of a global powerhouse business such as Hanjin shipping and the failure of local agency Great Southern Shipping highlighted that businesses may not be as stable as what they appear on the surface.

Freight forwarders have become "quasi banks" to their importer customers committing to paying duties and Government charges on behalf of customers, on credit, as well as taking on the service cost risk. Debtor management becomes all the more crucial in an a highly competitive environment with lower margins and questionable stability of some clients including "blue chip" companies .

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has partnered with Logical Financial Management (LFM), National Credit Insurance Brokers (NCI) and Coface to provide a combined and specialist Trade Credit Insurance program.

NCI, like LFM, are Steadfast Network Insurance Brokers and have been established for over 30 years. NCI are the largest player in this field with a strong presence in the freight forwarding and transport industry. They provide a fully integrated debtors management solution for businesses in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore .

This new partnership will deliver the continued expertise of James Cotis and the team at LFM providing personal service and continued support to FTA members. Our shared aim is to provide the industry with the opportunity of evaluating risks and making an informed business decisions.

In February 2017 we will be making contact with you to discuss how we can assist you in your debtor management. In the interim, please feel free to contact James Cotis to find out more about our Trade Credit Insurance program.
