Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) announces new Director appointments

The Board of Directors of the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) has unanimously accepted the nomination of Sean Richards, Executive General Manager- Logistics for Visy Industries, and Eimear McDonagh, Director of the Australian Cotton Shippers Association (ACSA), to join the board commencing 24 May 2017.

Sean Richards will be replacing Goran Miljanic as the Visy Industries representative on the Board. Visy, as Australia's largest containerised exporter by volume, will continue playing a central role in the direction of the Association under Sean's leadership.

The appointment of the Australian Cotton Shippers Association to the APSA board is a move to bring the two organisations closer together, with a focus on advocacy activities. FTA Secretariat Travis Brooks-Garrett notes "the addition of the Australian Cotton Shippers Association to our board reflects the importance of the cotton industry as a growing export commodity at a time of increasing international supply chain costs". The Australian Cotton Shippers Association represents in excess of 50,000 TEU on exports annually.

The Board Meeting also saw the appointment of Dominic Dillon, Trade Execution Manager for Cargill, as the new Treasurer for the Association.

The Australian Peak Shippers Association has grown rapidly since the new Secretariat and Chairman were appointed, with new members including Mondelez, Emerald Grain, CH Broadbent, Casella Family Wines, the Horticultural Exporters Association, AH Beard, Flinders Ports and others.

APSA is Australia's largest representative group of containerised exporters, representing more than 550,000 TEU on exports annually.

Hunt & Hunt Lawyers - Why it is important to qualify your quotes

Hunt & Hunt has been presenting to FTA members about Australian consumer law and the importance of ensuring your statements are accurate.  One area we have highlighted relates to claims regarding pricing – if the pricing is conditional, don't keep the conditions to yourself.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal recently decided a dispute between a freight forwarder and consolidator of goods regarding an amount of freight, where unspoken pricing conditions were the cause of the dispute ...read more

GST on Port Services Charges – a practical compliance approach

We are pleased to advise that Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) received the following positive feedback from the ATO Deputy Commissioner, Tim Dyce:

"We can advise that the text of the draft notice is correct in regard to the interpretation of the relevant provisions of A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999 (GST Act). We also consider that the draft notice correctly interprets the relevant ATO view products/rulings mentioned.

We acknowledge that care was taken to ensure that this notice would not be interpreted as being a directive issued by the ATO. We note that in paragraph 8 you have correctly stated: "The ATO does not prescribe how freight forwarders should manage this matter."

Thank you for providing us the opportunity to review this notice and good luck with your endeavours to streamline the business practices in this industry."

Cargo Club of Australia airfreight lunheon

Members of FTA, APSA and the Australian Horticultural Exporters Association, were excited to join the Cargo Club of Australia for their quarterly industry luncheon focusing on airfreight issues. More than 60 attendees enjoyed presentations from Andrew Hyles (Head of the Air Security Taskforce at the Office of Transport Security), Travis Brooks-Garrett (Secretariat of the Australian Peak Shippers Association), Clayton Williams (Melbourne Terminal Manager at Menzies Aviation) and Sandro Penzo (Cargo Manager at Air New Zealand) addressing the upcoming "known consignor" security requirements and other industry developments.

Special thanks once again to Steve Brogan, the President of the Club, for all his efforts in organising the event, and to the event sponsors- industry legends and FTA members Lance Evans (Evans Consolidators) and Colin Speechley (Wholesale Logistics).

It's less than six weeks until US-bound air cargo screening requirements change. Are you ready?

I am writing further to my previous email to again seek your assistance to advise your members who export to the US by air that screening requirements for air cargo to the US will change from 1 July.

These requirements have been imposed on airlines by the US Government.  The Australian Government is working with businesses to help them comply with the US requirements, ensure readiness and reduce red tape while enabling a smooth transition.

As part of our communications campaign to increase awareness and assist compliance, we seek your assistance to distribute the attached email to your members who export to the US and others who may have an interest in these new requirements.

We will be providing you with one more email to send out to members between now and 1 July with further information.

Thank you again for your help. If you have any inquiries or we can be of further assistance, please contact us via email at aircargosecurity@infrastructure.gov.au
