Food Grade Empty Containers

Following last week's member report and commentary in Lloyds List Australia, we have been in contact with Shipping Australia Ltd (SAL) asking for a meeting to find common ground on issues affecting our respective memberships.

As a part of this engagement we have asked for the contacts of shipping lines that have readily available 20' food grade containers, available for immediate export use, particularly in BNE, MEL and ADL.

We look forward to the SAL response and the sharing of this important data.

In the meantime, members are still reporting shortages, including one member report from Brisbane of depleted FQ stock until the end of March.

We encourage both Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) and Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) members to continue to share their experiences to assist us in our advocacy and operational solutions.

WELCOME TO THE ALLIANCE

Picture L to R - Tony Pearson (CEO A.H. Beard) and Paul Zalai (FTA / APSA)

Last week Paul Zalai and I had the privilege of hearing the AH Beard family and business history and to view their current Sydney operations. Their amazing success in exporting beds to China is a good news story for all of Australia and demonstrates the value of manufacturing quality, high end products. It was also fascinating to witness the introduction of smart bed technology that track sleeping patterns to assist in overall health strategies.

We are absolutely delighted to announce that AH Beard is the latest business to join the FTA/ APSA alliance and we look forward to supporting their business into the future.

TRANSPORT & THE BORDER

Red-hot truck turnaround times

Airfreight and de-consolidated sea cargo deliveries - for whatever reason, market forces are not taking effect.

Assuming that transport operators are passing on associated detention waiting time costs, you would expect that importer complaints to the forwarder would cascade its way back to the master co-loader. Despite hearing these complaints, co-loaders continue to make commercial decisions to maintain the status quo with their existing depot. I can only assume that rates are so cheap that it is worth putting up with the customer grief and any potential loss of business.

To support our ongoing advocacy on these key issues, please share your views either publicly via our blog as published yesterday by Lloyds List Australia or direct to me at pzalai@FTAlliance.com.au ... read more

We would like to again thank our members for sharing their experiences around the changes to HS2017. We also very much appreciate the support from DIBP officers in addressing remedial action. Based on all information that we have received, we understand that all Tariff Items where Rates, Stat Codes and/or Start or End Dates were identified have been addressed with final ICS fixes completed on Thursday 12 January 2017.

If you are experiencing any ongoing issues, please let me know at pzalai@FTAlliance.com.au

MANAGING BUSINESS RISKS

Now more than ever it is essential for freight forwarders to safeguard against credit risks.

The dramatic collapse of a global powerhouse business such as Hanjin shipping and the failure of local agency Great Southern Shipping highlighted that businesses may not be as stable as what they appear on the surface.

Freight forwarders have become "quasi banks" to their importer customers committing to paying duties and Government charges on behalf of customers, on credit, as well as taking on the service cost risk. Debtor management becomes all the more crucial in an a highly competitive environment with lower margins and questionable stability of some clients including "blue chip" companies .

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has partnered with Logical Financial Management (LFM), National Credit Insurance Brokers (NCI) and Coface to provide a combined and specialist Trade Credit Insurance program.

NCI, like LFM, are Steadfast Network Insurance Brokers and have been established for over 30 years. NCI are the largest player in this field with a strong presence in the freight forwarding and transport industry. They provide a fully integrated debtors management solution for businesses in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore .

This new partnership will deliver the continued expertise of James Cotis and the team at LFM providing personal service and continued support to FTA members. Our shared aim is to provide the industry with the opportunity of evaluating risks and making an informed business decisions.

In February 2017 we will be making contact with you to discuss how we can assist you in your debtor management. In the interim, please feel free to contact James Cotis to find out more about our Trade Credit Insurance program.

16.1.2017 - OPINION - RED HOT TRUCK TURNAROUND TIMES

In this scorching summer, we are forcing drivers to sit in queues for hours at our LCL depots and air cargo terminals.

In contrast, despite some operational issues late last year, the introduction of genuine stevedoring competition is contributing to the continued improvement of truck turnaround times and landside services. Furthermore, the Port Botany Landside Improvement Strategy (PBLIS) has added a layer of regulation over the vehicle booking system creating extra incentives to meet mandatory standards resulting in the removal of truck queues from the port precinct. ... read more
