VICT to increase Infrastructure Surcharge

Freight & Trade Alliance director Paul Zalai commented on the general trend of stevedores imposing and upping infrastructure surcharges.

He pointed to commentary by the outgoing DP World Australia CEO Paul Scurrah in Shipping Australia's recently released Annual Review 2018.

"[In the piece, he claimed] that taking the lead on the introduction of the infrastructure surcharges was a 'brave' initiative. In our opinion, a brave and fair option would have been for DP World to pass on costs to their direct commercial shipping line clients rather than imposing unregulated fees on third parties," Mr Zalai said.

"Stevedores are laughing all the way to the bank with what has become a convenient 'money tap' – it is no wonder that other stevedores have followed. How else can they match low rates to shipping lines, remain profitable and retain and attract new business?"

Mr Zalai applauded the Victorian government for "taking the lead with their inquiry and [we] look forward to supporting their investigations".

"We are now totally reliant on government intervention as the only way to put an end to spiralling Infrastructure Surcharge costs," he said.

Weekly Market Commentary

Markets concluded a very strong week of gains, boosted by the Fed's 'pause' on raising rates and ongoing trade negotiations between China and the US. The Chinese Trade mission to the US, ended with 'important progress', which will be followed by a trade delegation from the US to China. Moves are afoot to have a US/China trade summit between President Trump and Xi, to conclude an agreement, by the deadline of March 1st. This has been a strong process and reassured markets. The Fed reassured markets with a pause in their rate raising strategy, promising to act 'in the light of economic and financial developments'. This turnaround was forced upon the Fed, by the 2018 4th Quarter collapse in equities and massive pressure from the Trump administration. ... read more
