FTA edging closer

On Tuesday 13 October 2015, Mr Shorten outlined Labor's support for the China Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) in exchange for greater safeguards for local workers through amendments to the 457 visa program. Labor has called for the minimum base rate of pay for 457 visas to be lifted to $57,000 a year and require all jobs to be first advertised locally.

Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Robb said he will consider Labor's proposals in good faith ...read more

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the TPP

SMEs are key contributors to Australian employment and economic growth, including through goods and services exports. In 2013-14, SMEs comprised 90% of goods exporters and over 60% of services exporters.  The TPP explicitly recognises the significance of SMEs and includes provisions that will make it easier for Australian SMEs to benefit from international trade and investment ... read more

Momentum builds for trade deal with European Union

ABF Profile on Importers

Here is a good reason why importers should not swap customs brokerages!

Whilst the above seizure provides an example of the great work being completed by the ABF, it is evident that some of their profiling and practices are somewhat draconian, unsophisticated and disruptive to legitimate trade.

The ABF appear to profile any importer that changes customs broker ... this may have some logic as a risk indicator but there needs to be some discretion ... what if the import consignment is from a trusted entity that for commercial reasons simply moved to a new service provider ... what if those goods were URGENT life saving medical diagnostic systems ... you can imagine the response from our member when they were essentially told to go away, sit tight and wait for the release!

We have another situation where we successfully facilitated a sale of a customs brokerage which was acquired by another customs brokerage.

Yes you guessed it ... the profile hit again with the system thinking that all of the clients of the purchased customs brokerage had moved to the new entity ... the ABF response to date has been less than satisfactory.

We are on the case!

LIVE allows you to book jobs with any 'LIVE-enabled' transport company anywhere in Australia. It allows you to edit (manage) jobs online, at any time and provides full visibility of every move of every container,

Importantly, LIVE features an alerts dashboard to providing advance warning of potential problems such as container detention demurrage before it occurs.

Is there a cost?

16.10.2015 - OPINION - Are risks appropriately managed when offering credit?

In a highly competitive market, importers increasingly have an expectation on customs brokers to act as pseudo bankers to finance freight, duty, GST and import processing fees. This explains why many importers are not too fussed about advocating to government to offer duty deferral as those that use third party service providers commonly already receive up to 90 day credit terms to cover disbursements
