Some 150 plus members, friends, colleagues old and new and industry leaders attended the Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) Victorian 2021-22 CPD Border Compliance Program last week.

Highlights included updates from Biosecurity and Australian Border Force and we closed both days running an engaging interactive session with delegates on some of the challenges they face which will better inform FTA for our ongoing advocacy and future bi-lateral meetings.

Our thanks are extended not only to all the delegates who attended but also our speakers and sponsors who assist us greatly in putting together a professional and informative program.

Being able to see Paul & Caroline Zalai in person for the first time in a very long time was also a personal highlight for Sal Milici

MEDIA COVERAGE - SHIPPING CRISIS
Australian Financial Review - SHIPPING SPOT RATES FALL BUT CHRISTMAS DELIVERIES STILL IN DOUBT

Paul Zalai, director of the Freight & Trade Alliance says exporters are feeling the effects of what he describes as "inadequate services". Bookings are getting rolled, container availability is stretched and freight rates remain two to four times what they were pre-pandemic.

"While the easing of shipping line rates to some trade lanes is welcome, it is only a very small part of the picture," Zalai says.

"Price is a significant factor; however, the lack of services is a bigger concern. The federal government is leading the way with trade liberalisation measures such as free trade agreements, but this will count for little if we can't get our produce on ships." - READ MORE
The Loadstar - CONTAINER TRADE DELAYS HEAPING MISERY ON AUSTRALIAN IMPORTERS AND EXPORTERS

Paul Zalai, director of the Freight & Trade Alliance, said: "Stevedores and empty container parks are reducing fees to shipping lines and holding transport companies to ransom to pay terminal access charges."

He called for "some form of regulation" to force stevedores and empty container parks to negotiate rates direct with shipping lines, adding: "No further regulation on pricing would be required, as shipping lines could recover this cost in commercial dealings with contracted importers, exporters and freight forwarders." - READ MORE
INDEPENDENT REVIEW
PORTS AND MARITIME ADMINISTRATION ACT 1995 AND THE PORT BOTANY LANDSIDE IMPROVEMENT STRATEGY (PBLIS)

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has received advice that Mr. Ed Willett has been appointed to conduct a much welcomed review of PBLIS and the associated Ports and Marine Administration Act 1995.

Whilst the terms of reference do not allow the review to consider the application of Terminal Access / Infrastructure fees by stevedores against transport operators, FTA believe the review will be critical to ensure continuation of PBLIS and more importantly the strengthening of same to ensue a level of fairness between all parties involved at the landside interface.

To avoid the distractions of the upcoming Christmas / New Year period it has been decided that the discussion paper will be released in early 2022. We urge members to review the below links and be ready to be part of the conversation in the New Year.

eBay helps weed out bad seeds...and plants
As part of the advocacy that Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) undertakes in the international trade and logistics arena, we have established a number of working forums across our diversity of members to cater for their specific needs.

One such forum is the e-Commerce Reference Group established to focus on that segment of the market that has seen substantial growth over the past 18 months and has particular requirements.

It was therefore pleasing to see that eBay had recently received recognition from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment for their activities in protection of Australia's' biosecurity.

BIOSECURITY INNOVATION PROGRAM
The Biosecurity Innovation Program supports collaboration between industry and government. Now in its fourth year, the program invests in the identification, development and implementation of innovative technologies and approaches to enhance the capacity of our national biosecurity system.

We are looking for new approaches and technologies that will contribute to a sustainable and effective national Australian biosecurity system, and ways to modernise our current biosecurity risk management practices. The program will provide funding and support for projects focusing on our five key focus areas:

  • Communication and Collaboration
  • Automation
  • Data and Intelligence
  • Risk Analysis
  • Surveillance, diagnostics and screening
