WEEK IN REVIEW
GSF SECRETARIAT REPORT : WEEK 23

FTA / APSA has board representation on the Global Shippers Forum (GSF) – for your reference, the latest GSF Secretariat Report for Week 23 is available HERE (FTA/APSA MEMBER LOGIN REQUIRED)

The report highlights shippers demands over the X-Press Pearl sinking and IMO adoption of carbon reduction measures. Importantly and as outlined in last week's members notice FTA / APSA ADVOCACY - CALL FOR A FORMAL REVIEW AND A FEDERAL MARITIME REGULATOR , we continue to work closely with the GSF in terms of shipping competition maters learning from significant concerns in the European block exemption arrangements and safeguards that we require in an Australian context.

INDUSTRIAL ACTION - THREAT OF DISRUPTIVE EVENTS

While we had hoped that industrial relations matters may have been resolved last year, we are unfortunately witnessing escalation of Protected Industrial Action at Patrick Stevedoring, Hutchison and Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) with an Enterprise Agreements also yet to be finalised at Svitzer.

As outlined in the  FTA / APSA submission (pages 16/17) to the Productivity Commission Inquiry into Vulnerable Supply Chains, APSA made an application to the Australian International Trade & Transport Industry Development Fund Ltd (AITTIDF) to support an economic assessment of the impact of 'disruptive events' - READ MORE
ESCALATION OF MEDIA CAMPAIGN

We are particularly grateful to Kacy and Jayne Pearson (Plasdene Glass-Pak) who responded to our request for a member representative to go in front of the cameras to support the FTA /APSA advocacy for regulation to adequately protect the Australian trade sector.

Collectively, we were able to provide examples highlighting the impacts of current shipping performance on both Australian importers and exporters – view the episode of 'The Business' titled 'PRICE HIKES – SURGING SHIPPING COSTS'.  HERE and online article 'SHIPPING COST SURGE RAISES RETAIL PRICE PRESSURES AND INFLATION RISKS' available HERE.

JOINT MEDIA RELEASE - INDUSTRY DEMANDS CRITICAL VACCINE ACCESS FOR HIGH-RISK ESSENTIAL WORKERS

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA), the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) and the Australian Logistics Council (ALC), implore State and Commonwealth Governments to recognise the criticality of freight and supply chain workers, providing them immediate access to the vaccine - READ MORE
NEW AGE TECHNOLOGY 101
Our appreciation is extended to Kai Lincoln, Managing Director - SEKO Omni-Channel Logistics for his contribution in our most recent edition of Across Borders.

"And here we are, 2021. Only 8 years until cyborg wars will ravish the earth (according to The Terminator) and 6 years beyond hoverboards and self-drying clothes (according to Back to the Future 2). Reality is that there have been some amazing technological advancements in the world since those movies were released in the 1980's, but it seems we haven't moved at the pace those writers had expected" -  READ MORE

IFAM & APSA CONFERENCE

As outlined in last week's member notice FTA/APSA MEMBER ADVOCACY UPDATE - CANBERRA 2 & 3 JUNE 2021, Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) representatives met last week with Hon Dan Tehan (Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment) and Michael Byrne (International Freight Co- ordinator General overseeing IFAM). A part of this advocacy was to express a need for a continuation of IFAM beyond September 2021 as outlined in our submission to the Productivity Commission Inquiry into Vulnerable Supply Chains.

RECOMMENDATION 7 (extension of IFAM funding) – the Federal Government should allocate additional funds to maintain the International Freight Assistance (IFAM) and / or similar financial relief measures to support the air cargo supply chain sector until the end of 2023 (at minimum), with actual allocation of funds subject to periodic reviews pending the return of international passenger flight services.
While we await the Federal Government's deliberations on this matter, we are delighted to advise that Michael Byrne will be joining Air Vice Marshal Margaret Staib, the The Hon. Michael McCormack (Deputy Prime Minister) and other prominent government representatives at the APSA Conference in Wagga Wagga on 16 & 17 August 2021.
CHINA SOUTHERN FREIGHTERS – EXPORTS EX BRISBANE

In the interim and as a part of our engagement with the Brisbane Airport Corporation, we have received some encouraging news that China Southern will operate an A350 freighter service twice per week into BNE from Guangzhou and return, operating Wednesday's and Sundays.

Flights will operate from this weekend until early July. We understand that the inbound space is fully sold but they have plenty of capacity for outbound cargo for anyone needing to move products to China in the next month.
DEPOT STAFF - APPROVED ARRANGEMENTS, SEC 77G OBLIGATIONS
REMINDER - CUSTOMS BROKER RENEWALS

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has received the following reminder from Australian Border Force (ABF) reminding that the licences for ALL Customs Brokers (nominees, corporate and sole trader) will expire on 30 June 2021.  ABF executives have highlighted to FTA that "To date we have received around 70% of renewals from customs broker licence holders however there is only 3 weeks remaining for the remainder to complete the process." -  READ MORE
