SHIPPING DELAYS & COSTS - AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
VICT AND MUA LOCK HORNS - THREAT OF SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC IMPACTS
VICT MEDIA RELEASE: Despite Victoria's sharp COVID-19 lock down, the MUA is to dramatically step up its industrial campaign against Australia's only automated container terminal, VICT, with a series of full shift work-bans and stoppages beginning this Friday.

The bans go beyond full shift stop-work directives and include threats to impose old-fashioned over-manning and restrictive work practices on VICT, directly undermining the competitiveness the terminal derives from its automated technology and modern way of working.

With no update from the MUA today, Tim Vancampen, CEO of VICT, said he was amazed the MUA would even consider this sort of attack while the Victorian economy was already at a standstill owing to its third lock-down.

"VICT accounts for a third of Victoria's container freight. The union is directly attacking VICT's unique way of working as a modern, automated terminal. They want to take us back to the past, no matter the cost or the ill-considered timing in the context of the lockdown.

"This campaign won't produce the extra jobs, massive pay rises and fewer hours the Union has promised our employees. All it will do is undermine VICT's competitiveness and threaten the benefits of port automation for Victoria and for the Port of Melbourne," he said.

"If the MUA was serious about representing VICT employees' interests it would seek to protect their modern jobs, not jeopardise them," he said.

PORT OF MELBOURNE - TARIFF REBALANCING PROPOSAL
The Port of Melbourne (PoM) thanked FTA / APSA for our participation in consultations on the tariff rebalancing proposal, which was submitted to the Essential Services Commission (ESC) on 23 December 2020.

Following discussions with the ESC and in order to provide further opportunities for Port Users and other stakeholders to provide their views, PoM has decided to temporarily withdraw the Rebalancing Application and defer the proposed tariff adjustment from 1 July 2021 to a later date.

PoM will be contact with us in the coming weeks regarding further consultation on this matter. In the interim, members can be contacte PoM at rts@portofmelbourne.com.

"While biosecurity must come first, it is also important that we explore more innovative ways of operating. Doing more of the same is not an option.

"Partnering and co-design activities with industry at both a grass roots and strategic level will be critical to achieving reform, while ensuring the flow of trade and goods to Australian consumers keeps moving.
INNOVATION SUPPORTING STRONGER CARGO BIOSECURITY
As outlined in the most recent edition of our member magazine Across Borders, an article was provided from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment highlighting that managing biosecurity risks is a priority for Australia. To address these risks, it is important to identify and implement new and innovative approaches to biosecurity operations.
The department's Biosecurity Innovation Branch is finding new ways to conduct biosecurity inspections and audits in response to increasing trade volumes and COVID-19 restrictions. Head of Biosecurity Innovation at the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, Cathryn Geiger, said the team is collaborating with clients and industry to run pilot trials for initiatives that will improve Australia's biosecurity system and help address a range of challenges - READ MORE
