"A POSITIVE DISRUPTER IN ONLINE EDUCATION" ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW…
The WiseTech Academy is changing the way we think about online education. In line with the latest research on how people learn, the emphasis has shifted from the knowledge of an individual teacher in a classroom to the combined knowledge of a team of experts bringing their industry experience to each student with one goal: to enhance learning and professional growth.

FTA / APSA CONTINUE TO ESCALATE ADVOCACY LEADING MEDIA COMMENTARY
Thank you to the ABC for giving us the opportunity in its national broadcast to talk on the delays and costs for the international trade sector suffering from port congestion - LISTEN HERE (feature at 30 min: 54 sec)
PATRICK TERMINALS - WEIGHT AMENDMENT FEE FOR IMPORT CONTAINERS
Members will be aware that Patrick Terminals have announced the introduction of a Weight Amendment Fee ($230.00 per container) for import containers effective January 4, 2021 for their Brisbane Autostrad Terminal, with dates TBC for their other terminals around Australia.  This fee is to be charged to the transport carrier that collects the container.

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) support any actions that keep our roads safe and compliance with Chain of Responsibility legislation. However, we yet again see the transport carrier being "charged" for actions that are outside of their control.

Why are these fees not being charged back to the Shipping Line and action taken against the shipper who loaded the container? Without the shipper or shipping lines paying the costs of incorrect weights, it is difficult to see how the charge will influence better compliance.

Rather, we will once again see these "fees" being passed through the logistics chain before getting to the importer resulting in increased costs.

As with infrastructure charges the transport carriers are being constrained by having to sign "carrier access agreements" with the various terminals or NOT being allowed to access those facilities and carry out their activities. However, at least with infrastructure charges, the transport carrier can predict the charges.

There will be no way for a transport carrier to predict which consignments will be subject to a Weight Amendment Fee.

FTA will seek discussion with Patrick Terminals as well as the relevant port authorities and regulators.
WEBINAR - CONTAINER DETENTION WHEN IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO RETURN EMPTIES
In this webinar, Russell Wiese (Principal Hunt & Hunt Lawyers) will cover the following:

1. Can detention charges be enforced where the shipping line cannot provide a    return address
2. Do force majeure / frustration issues affect container detention
3. Can forwarders seek damages for increased storage and staged container costs
4. Who in the supply chain is liable for container detention charges
5. If detention charges are imposed and unpaid, can the shipping hold releases of future consignments
6. Limiting detention charges
7. Resolving disputes regarding detention charges.

Post the webinar this session will be available for purchase or as part of  a member CPD online package via ComplianceNetFTA. (3 CPD points – Stream B - FTA129)

WESTERN AUSTRALIA TAKES BOLD MOVE TOWARDS CONTAINER PORT
Thank you to WESTPORT for their commentary in the most recent edition of our member magazine, Across Borders.
While much of the country has been paralysed by COVID-19 and its devastating economic impacts, the Western Australian State Government is investing in long-term planning for a future freight network designed to meet that State's needs for the next 50 years or more.

It has endorsed the Westport Taskforce's recommendation that a future container port be developed in the existing Kwinana Industrial Area, south of Perth, and it be connected by an uninterrupted freight corridor that effectively rings the city – taking heavy container trucks off suburban roads -
