OFFICIAL ATO ADVICE – DUTY, GST & IPC DISBURSEMENTS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN CUSTOMS BROKERAGES' TURNOVER
Many freight forwarder / customs brokerages make large payments of Duty, GST and Import Processing Charges on behalf of importers. These significant disbursements distort true operating performance and take many small and medium businesses over the $50 million turnover threshold outlined for the eligibility for Cash Flow Boost (and also jeopardising some members' eligibility to JobKeeper).
GOOD NEWS - as announced in last night's member notice, we finally received the advice we had been hoping for from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) ... read more
Thank you to members for your overwhelmingly positive feedback received overnight, perhaps best summarised with the below response - we feel privileged to be in a position to make a difference !
"Dear Clint & Paul, I just read the FTA email re: turnover and wanted to congratulate you both. I wanted to thank you, on behalf of all the business members that will benefit from your efforts, expertise and determination." |

VALE – GEOFF HOLBEN
It is with great sadness that we last week advised members that Geoffrey (Geoff) Douglas HOLBEN passed away on Sunday 3 May 2020 Both Geoff and his late brother Colin were both industry stalwarts in the international freight forwarding sector. Geoff was a licensed customs broker and a long term employee at AGS World Transport.
A funeral service for Geoff will be held today, Tuesday 12 May, 2020 commencing at 12pm.
We have been advised by Geoff's wife Liz that unfortunately, due to COVID-19, they are by law restricted in terms of participants at the funeral. The funeral can be viewed HERE
The family ask that no flowers be sent to funeral, rather to their home at 28 Marshall St, Petersham Ideally the preferred gift is to donate blood

6.5.2020 DCN - CONSTANCE SEEKS PRE-SELECTION FOR EDEN-MONARO As a minister, Mr Constance challenged stevedores over infrastructure and terminal fees. "Stevedores must act responsibly and immediately put a stop to any price hikes," he said just before Christmas. Freight and Trade Alliance director and Australian Peak Shippers secretariat Paul Zalai told Daily Cargo News he hoped the government would continue to pursue the issue. Mr Zalai also said the minister warned DPWA against further increases on import fees scheduled for this coming Friday. "It is a pity the minister will not around as we may never know what his response would have been to another snubbing," he said. "Perhaps the his successor will complete unfinished business by enforcing regulation remembering it's the efficient movement of goods that generates national wealth, not the welfare of carriers or infrastructure owners ... read more
COMMENT - Now that Minister Constance is staying in NSW politics, hopefully he will complete unfinished business in dealings with stevedores |

FREE WEBINAR TODAY - COMPLIANCE FOR IMPORTATION OF COVID-19 PRODUCTS - 12PM AEST 12 MAY 2020 |
|
Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19 any customs broker working with the limited number of importers of controlled products of the types required for the outbreak, could be reasonably confident that their client was familiar with the requirements for importing such goods. A broad knowledge of such controls was therefore all that a broker required. |
|
|
During these unprecedented times our industry is faced with importers not only with little or no knowledge of importing controlled goods for use in the pandemic, but sometimes with little knowledge of importing.
Non compliance with the requirements may expose the parties not only to penalties but also to seizure of the goods as prohibited imports. This session will concentrate on products being imported for COVID-19 and the types of controls that may apply, including: |

This session has been accredited for 3 CPD Points in Stream A (code FTA111) |

Over the past two months, two important Court judgements have been delivered that impact customs broker compliance in dealing with tariff classification and TCO applications. - High Court Pharm-A-Care decision – this case concerned the classification of vita-gummies – food versus medicament. However, the case has wider implications and provides guidance on general classification principles.
