Infrastructure Surcharges - update on advocacy activity
FTA / APSA and the Container Transport Alliance Australia (CTAA) representatives are scheduled to again meet with the Peter Achterstraat AM (NSW Productivity Commissioner) on 17 February in Sydney and will also meet with the Hon. Melissa Horne (Victorian Minister for Ports) in terms of outcomes from the Port Pricing and Access Review commissioned by the Victorian Government to examine specific matters such as stevedore-imposed Infrastructure Surcharges and the Port of Melbourne's proposed increased tariff on all full import containers to fund the Port Rail Transformation Project.

As an extended approach to our advocacy, FTA contacted the Senator the Hon. Bridget McKenzie (and fellow industry members of Biosecurity Futures advisory group) following on from the Minister for Agriculture's media release from 3 January 2020 highlighting the impacts on farmers who have been hard hit by the bush fires. The FTA correspondence highlighted that the rapidly increasing port related access charges are having critical operational impacts for our local remaining manufacturers, farmers and export-focussed agriculture sectors impacted by extreme environmental conditions.

We thank members (particularly exporters) for highlighting the impacts of these crippling fees and encourage more formal correspondence to me at pzalai@FTAlliance.com.au to add weight to our advocacy with regulators.
FTA/APSA IN THE MEDIA
We are gathering momentum and continue to receive exceptionally good coverage in the Australian Financial Review (AFR) who again featured our advocacy position on Infrastructure Surcharges in today's publication

DP World 'snubs' Andrew Constance, hikes port fees
"Paul Zalai, director of the Freight & Trade Alliance which has previously called on NSW to use legislation to force DP World to reverse the fees, said the stevedore had "snubbed" Mr Constance.

The freight alliance, which wants the fees to be scrapped, plans to meet with the NSW Productivity Commission on February 17 to raise its concerns. It is hoping that a Victorian review of port fee increases will lead Victoria to introduce regulations similar to NSW that give the state powers to intervene."

FINANCE REPORT

Weekly Market Commentary
The Fed minutes were released Friday and they confirmed the 2019 interest rate cuts,
telegraphing rates would remain steady and at record lows for much of 2020.

This supported the narrative of extremely generous monetary policy allowing investment to continue and maintaining the low cost of borrowing.

The holiday season is now over in the US and Europe and the coming week will welcome an plethora of global economic data releases.
