URBAN ENCROACHMENT AND THE NEED TO PROTECT OUR CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE |
|
Thank you once again to Emmanuel Papagiannakis (Victoria International Container Terminal, Chief Commercial Officer) for his commentary in the Autumn 2019 edition of Across Borders
"Rail options for all three stevedores is essential for a thriving economy. Long term infrastructure plans need to be developed to sustain trade activity and economic growth.
Currently there is only one near-dock rail terminal at West Swanson Dock with plans to convert to on-dock, however to maximise the potential of the entire supply chain to operate at its best, there needs to be a solid commitment to have efficient and cost effective rail connections to all three international stevedores.

THE LOAD STAR - PORT OF MEBOURNE $300M "RAIL SOLUTION" WOULD RESTRICT COMPETITION "A joint statement from the Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) notes that, if a $15 fee was applied to every import container for the 47-year length of the lease, it would deliver the port authority far more than A$300m. It called for "transparency on the investment and recovery by Port of Melbourne under the existing regulatory framework to ensure there is no over-recovery". It also wants terminal operators to be "compelled to pass on the rental savings and lower rail operating costs to users", and that "cost savings from larger ships calling at the port of Melbourne are passed through to cargo owners". And while the FTA and APSA said they supported "rail, and the need for a port rail solution", they added that the PRS needed to be considered holistically, given that significant investment in the hinterland rail infrastructure was still required.

FINANCE REPORT
Weekly Market Commentary
UK PM May has finally resigned (officially leaving June 7), after completely failing to deliver Brexit, as promised on numerous occasions. She will be remembered as perhaps the worst conservative leader in a generation and leaves the party and country, in turmoil.
The GBP is trading 1.2700, much lower than the economic performance dictates and this can be solely attributable to the Brexit chaos over three years.
The new Tory leader may deliver Brexit and the GBP could literally roar back.
The EU will now have to become a lot more flexible, as their intransigence was partly to blame for the disaster, so their leaders will be in a state of concern.
The EUR trades 1.1120 and will be impacted by a new deal. ... read more Paul Bettany Collinson & Co 0406-744-923 paul@collinsonfx.com
