FTA / APSA - ADVOCACY

Paul Zalai , Director FTA / Secretariat APSA last week attended two Ministerial Round Tables with outcomes to feed into the Treasurer's upcoming Productivity Roundtable

BRISBANE 12 AUG 2025 : The Hon. Julie Collins Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry hosted the Roundtable: Unlocking Productivity in Australian Agriculture. Outcomes underscored strong support for reforms to lift productivity and resilience, with food and fibre central to policy design. Key themes included streamlined regulation, harmonised standards, digital solutions, and continued funding for technical market access. Participants also highlighted joint government–industry investment in skills, infrastructure, and supply chain efficiency, while linking agriculture to broader national goals.

SYDNEY 14 AUG 2025 : direct talks with The Hon. Tony Burke Minister for Home Affairs and senior ABF executives at the Trade and Travel Roundtable focused on accelerating legitimate trade—modernising the ICS, expanding the Trusted Trader program, and removing nuisance tariffs—and stopping illicit trade by managing risks earlier and replacing outdated sea x-ray processes ensuring border reforms drive growth while safeguarding Australia..

FTA / APSA - OUT & ABOUT

Amanda Bradfield, Head of International Freight & Logistics - FTA | APSA,  recently met Claudio Gomes and Cath from Macsteel during their visit to Perth.

Claudio and Amanda dove into all things supply chain, including Incoterms, letters of credit, landside issues, and the Australian Trusted Trader program, while Cath shared her insights on landside operations.

They all agreed there's nothing like connecting face-to-face to exchange ideas.

Amanda Bradfield recently met with Freight & Trade Alliance member Deugro.

Jim Pursell,
key account manager and Amanda discussed the export market and the forces currently shaping the supply chain.

The conversation touched on insights from the WiseTech Academy, market challenges and opportunities, and even a few lighthearted pronunciation tips.

It was a valuable exchange of ideas and a reminder of how important knowledge sharing is in navigating today's shifting trade environment. Thank you, Jim, for the thoughtful conversation.

At the end of the day they both got to the long and short of it !

Tom Jensen, General Manager Freight Policy & Operations - FTA | APSA recently caught up with Warren Cossell from Bonds Transport Group Pty Ltd

Bonds Transport are well known for their reliability and responsiveness — the kind of operator you can count on to get the job done efficiently and with a focus on service.

It is a\lways good to connect with industry colleagues who understand the value of getting freight where it needs to be, when it needs to be there.

Thanks for your time, Warren.

Sal Milici offered a big thanks to Kiera Reichert and the SIFA Australia & New Zealand team for hosting FTA  with coffee and morning tea as we welcomed Tom Jensen from Brisbane to a chilly Melbourne. Our conversation covered a lot of ground — the future of the industry, the reality of an ageing customs broker workforce, and what we're doing to attract and support the next generation.

Whilst in Melbourne this week Tom Jensen and Sal Milici caught up with Jon Martin of Wesfarmers to discuss some of the key pressures facing our sector. We outlined the growing impact of landside charges, the continued disruptions in global shipping, and the long-term challenges shaping the future of supply chains. Thanks to Jon for the warm welcome

ACROSS BORDERS

We would like to extend our thanks to Brett Charlton, Regional Representative, Tasmania - FTA | APSA and Principal -The Ship Consulting for his article in the recent Across Borders Annual Review 2025.

"By 2030, Tasmania's trade landscape could be vastly different. We are already seeing change with INCAT in Hobart launching the first electric aluminium ferry. Hydrogen could be next. Shifting weather may alter agricultural outputs, and automation may reshape our workforce. But despite these unknowns, Tasmania has built a strong foundation."
