Australian sea cargo operational highlights

Global Outlook - Summary
  • Carriers effectively have 15 - 20% less capacity available due to capacity being tied up through slow port productivity, congestion, and other schedule delays.
  • Vessel delays and port congestion in USA and North Europe continue to create cause for concern.
  • China COVID policy and China shutdowns creating transport and supply chain bottlenecks even though port terminals remain operational.
  • The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has seen huge increase BAF – Bunker fuel price. USD $700.00/MT to over USD $900.00/MT for the first time.
  • Carriers have adjusted their BAF review practices from monthly to fortnightly.
  • Bunker – BAF 78% higher in February 2022 than a year ago.
  • Cost impacts from significant rise in fuel prices will be reflected in rates from April 2022.
  • GRI's imposed by carriers on certain trade lanes ex Australia.
  • World Container Index as calculated by Drewry has seen a further decline of 3.8 % to USD $8,152.09 per 40FT container.
