FTA / APSA Weekly Report 2021/51 - sponsored by The Compliant Group

Tuesday, December 21, 2021
The international trade sector has once again showcased its resilience through enormous challenges that continued through 2021.

From an FTA / APSA perspective we have been proud to provide a vital support and advocacy role during this time and look forward to again working closely alongside members during 2022.

Many our members and their families have experienced the pressures of severe lockdowns and restrictions this past 24 months, let's take time over the holiday period to not only refresh our bodies and minds but also to cherish those near to us.

As outlined in the recording from the FTA team, we sincerely wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and a healthy New Year

ABC RURAL - MEAT EXPORT INDUSTRY SAYS AUSTRALIA'S REPUTATION DAMAGED BY PORT STRIKES

FTA SUBMISSION - PRODUCTIVITY COMMISSION COMPLIANCE COSTS OF NUISANCE TARIFFS
Tariff Concession Order system, current regulatory compliance obligations and options for consideration by the Commission

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) would like to acknowledge the extensive response from members, particularly licensed customs brokers, in contributing to a formal submission to the Productivity Commission project examining the costs and benefits associated with 'nuisance tariffs'. Specifically, the Commission defines the scope as tariffs that raise little revenue for the Australian Government, have negligible benefits for Australian producers, but impose compliance burdens on businesses.  READ MORE
2022 HARMONIZED SYSTEM CHANGES
Changes to the Harmonized system to come into effect on 1 January 2022 may also impact current Tariff Concession Orders (TCO's) and subsequently your clients imports - check out the changes and TCO concordance HERE

Changes to the Harmonized system effective 1 January 2022 will also have an impact on those importing bulk synthetic greenhouse gases -
The tariff classifications for import of bulk hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) will change from 1 January 2022 as part of the 2022 Harmonized System changes. Expanded tariff classifications will allow differentiation of the types of HFCs and HFC blends imported. The changes will support the global phase-down of HFCs, which are potent greenhouse gases. HFCs are controlled substances under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Program and require a licence and quota to import into Australia.

Bulk HFCs were mainly imported under tariff classification 2903.39 for unblended gases and 3824.7 for blended gases. These codes are being retired and new, expanded codes have been created. Importers will need to identify the specific type or blend of HFC being imported to allow for correct classification. More information is provided by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment at
Harmonized System codes for HFCs.
SEASONS GREETINGS FROM IFAM
A big IFAM thank you
The team who delivers the International Freight Assistance Mechanism (IFAM) has praised Australian businesses for their resilience and hard work in keeping international trade flowing in 2021.

With travel restrictions continuing to limit airfreight options this year, businesses across the nation needed to work harder than ever, including using IFAM to stay connected to overseas customers.

The IFAM team explained that retaining these relationships supports Australia's reputation as a reliable trading partner, which will be more important than ever as we adjust to a tougher new trading environment in 2022 and beyond.

"On behalf of the entire IFAMily, I'd like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone for their work with us in reconnecting our global supply chains during what has been a truly challenging 2021," IFAM lead Air Vice-Marshal Margaret Staib said.

"From airlines and freight forwarders, to industry bodies and individual businesses – everyone has really come together and taken a 'Team Australia' approach."
