Ag2030 Taskforce
The Prime Minister has recently announced the development of a National Food and Fibre Plan. This is based on the National Farmer's Federation 2030 - Roadmap which sets out a list of recommendations for Australia to achieve a $100BN agricultural industry by 2030. The national plan will identify priority areas where the Government can act, in particular, looking at how the sector can continue to be innovative and competitive, while strengthening Australia's biosecurity and export systems.

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Agriculture and Water Resources recently announced an inquiry into the challenges and opportunities of achieving a $100BN industry by 2030 with public submissions due by 14 October 2019.

If you would like to contribute to this Inquiry members can email Andrew Crawford at acrawford@ftalliance.com.au, or contact the Taskforce directly at ag2030@agriculture.gov.au

Victoria - Essential Services Commission (ESC) Inquiry into Land Rents and Infrastructure Charges Review

Last week the ESC commenced it's first inquiry to assess the use of market power in setting and reviewing land rents at the Port of Melbourne. It covers the period 1 November 2016 to 30 November 2019. The ESC has released a scope and discussion paper to support the inquiry which is available HERE

In related news, Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) continue to engage with Deloitte on the Freight Victoria Review into Port Pricing and Port Access. Yesterday FTA / APSA lodged our formal submission to Deloitte addressing stevedore infrastructure charges calling for State Government intervention. A draft report is due in October 2019 with the final recommendations expected to be handed down in November 2019.

Trusted Trader Origin Waiver Benefit- Making free trade agreements easier (and riskier)
Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) were proud to feature Russel Wiese in the Spring 2019 edition of Across Borders. Russell is well recognised as a thought leader in the Australian freight and trade sectors and we thank him for his ongoing support of FTA, APSA and our members. In this article Russell explores the risks and opportunities of wavering Certificate of Origin requirements under the Australian Trusted Trader programme.

"The origin waiver benefit removes this document from the supply chain.  In doing so, it removes the strongest evidence a customs broker could hold to prove the goods meet the terms of the free trade agreement.  This makes life easier for the exporter who now has less red tape but increases the risk and difficulty of the customs broker's job."
