Purpose
This Market Access Advice (MAA) notifies stakeholders that Thailand's Department of Fisheries has added blue mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) to their list of species not permitted for live import.
Summary of key points
- Thailand's Department of Fisheries maintains lists of species eligible for live import, conditionally eligible for live import, and species not permitted for live import.
- On 1 September 2026, the list of species not permitted for live import was updated to include blue mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis).
- Thai importers may apply for case-by-case approval to import live blue mussels. Importers should contact Thailand's Department of Fisheries regarding the process for such approvals.
- Due to the change to Thailand's import requirements, exports of live blue mussels to Thailand may not be accepted at border inspection. Exporters are encouraged to work closely with their importer to ensure a valid import permit has been issued which is dated after 1 September 2026.
- The department may not be able to facilitate the release of detained consignments impacted by the changes.
- Exporters of live seafood to this market should monitor the lists, available here for changes: Aquatic Animal Import and Export Control Group.
