New levy rates for the Petroleum or Engine Fuel Monitoring Levy (PEFML)

The rates for the PEFML levy decreased on 1 July 2026 from 0.69 cents per litre to 0.57 cents. This levy applies to petroleum or engine fuel specified in the Excise and Excise-equivalent Duties Table as motor spirits, diesel, biodiesel and ethyl alcohol. Reduced Compensatory Interest Rate Set

New Zealand Customs has set the reduced rate for compensatory interest at 2.72%, which came in effect on 1 July 2026.

The reduced rate is based on the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's 90-day bank bill rate. The applicable rate reflects the 90-day bank bill yield as at 30 June 2026.The reduced rate applies where clients voluntarily disclose inadvertent errors resulting in an underpayment.

New Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Alcohol Levy rates now in effect

The Ministry of Health has confirmed changes to the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Alcohol Levy rates which took effect on 1 July 2026.

Alcohol products removed from a licensed manufacturing area or imported after midnight on 30 June 2026 will be subject to the new rates.
