MELBOURNE: Last week Sal Milici attended an event to announce that Avalon Airport Melbourne and dnata have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore future international freight opportunities. It was great to attend the announcement and hear firsthand about the vision for Avalon as an emerging international freight gateway for Victoria. Increased freight capacity, greater competition and investment in logistics infrastructure are all critical to supporting Australia's trade competitiveness and supply chain resilience.

Equally pleasing was the opportunity to catch up with valued Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) members McHugh & Eastwood, whose expertise continues to play an important role in supporting Australia's international trade and logistics sector. ABC Riverina Breakfast - US–Iran renew exchange of hostilities across the Gulf

Freight & Trade Alliance's (FTA) Tom Jensen spoke with ABC Riverina to discuss the breakdown of the US–Iran agreement and the renewed exchange of hostilities across the Gulf.

The discussion examined the immediate impact on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, where vessel movements have again fallen sharply, as well as the growing risk of disruption spreading across key Middle Eastern trade routes. Tom also outlined what the renewed instability could mean for Australian importers and exporters, including higher fuel and marine insurance costs, constrained shipping capacity, longer transit times and renewed pressure on freight rates and supply-chain reliability.

The Australian Government is launching AusAlert, a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices. The national test message is a Critical Alert. All compatible mobile devices, smart watches and tablets will vibrate and play a loud siren-like sound that lasts for 10 seconds.

Expression of Interest - Kwinana Bulk Terminal redevelopment

Westport is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from the market for the design and construction of marine infrastructure for the Kwinana Bulk Terminal redevelopment.

The Kwinana Bulk Terminal (KBT) is a critical component of the Western Trade Coast, supporting bulk imports and exports across the State's largest industrial precinct. KBT imports all of Western Australia's (WA's) clinker, a key ingredient in cement production that supports construction and infrastructure projects across the State. READ MORE

Fiji Ports seeking new tariffs on shipping lines

FIJI Ports Corporation (FPCL) has told the nation's Competition and Consumer Commission its FJD 910 million, 10-year investment program will require new tariffs of up to 48% on certain international shipping services. FPCL says it has an urgent cash requirement of approximately FJD 393 million for a capital works program focused on critical infrastructure upgrades, rehabilitation works, and capacity expansion initiatives across key ports.

"FPCL's port infrastructure is operating under increasing strain due to age, capacity limitations, and evolving operational demands," the statutory company stated. READ MORE (story credit DCN)

A billion dollar industrial estate expected to bring more than 6,300 ongoing jobs in freight, logistics, advanced manufacturing and high technology industries by 2032 was approved in NSW this week.

Burrah Park, jointly owned by Uni Super and IFM Investors, is the largest industrial estate approved so far in the Western Sydney Aerotropolis in the new town of Bradfield City.
