IATA Direct Air Waybill (DAWB) Changes – International Advocacy Continues

FTA/APSA continues to work closely with FIATA and the Global Shippers Forum (GSF) regarding proposed IATA changes to Direct Air Waybill (DAWB) arrangements, which are scheduled to take effect today, 1 July 2026.

In its latest update, FIATA has expressed concern that the formal review process has not been completed prior to implementation and has written to airlines worldwide seeking clarification on how the revised framework will be applied in practice.

FTA/APSA remains actively engaged in international discussions, having provided Australian industry feedback and operational insights to support advocacy efforts on behalf of freight forwarders and shippers.

FTA / APSA - OUT & ABOUT

CANBERRA: Paul Zalai, Director and Co-founder - FTA  said it was a pleasure meeting The Hon. Don Farrell Minister for Trade and Tourism of Australia on Monday evening 29 June at Parliament House Canberra for  the launch of "Towards 2040: Navigating Australia's Trading Future".

Our thanks also to the Minister for agreeing to record a special message for delegates attending the upcoming Australia & New Zealand Shipping & Logistics Conference.

We appreciate your ongoing support for Australia's international trade sector and look forward to sharing your insights with conference attendees

MELBOURNE: Sal Milici (FTA /APSA) said it is always great catching up with Chris Lebon and Ken Chan from valued Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) member United Carriers, for a wide-ranging discussion on the issues shaping our industry.

Of course, no industry catch-up would be complete without talking about technology. We explored the growing role of software and AI in improving operational efficiency, along with the continuing need to strengthen the customs broker licensing pathway to ensure the profession remains sustainable for the future.

It's always valuable hearing directly from members about the opportunities, challenges and priorities that help inform FTA's ongoing advocacy on behalf of industry

SYDNEY: Paul Zalai (FTA/APSA) met with Brock Dodd from American Worldwide Agencies (AWA) and Matthew Backhouse from Gibson Freight.

AWA continues to play an important role in simplifying trade to and from the United States through specialist wholesale freight solutions.

We encourage members to visit their stand at the Australia & New Zealand Shipping & Logistics Conference and learn more about the services and opportunities they offer to the international trade

BRISBANE: Tom Jensen (FTA/APSA) recently had the privilege of attending the International Day of the Seafarer 2026 event hosted by Mission to Seafarers Brisbane Inc and WISTA Australia QLD.

It was fantastic to see around 80 people from across the maritime and logistics community come together to recognise the extraordinary contribution that seafarers make to global trade.

MELBOURNE: Lucy Robinson (FTA)  recently attended the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition centre for CeMat Australia 2026. Our industry isn't just about moving cargo, customs clearance, its about advocating for a seamless, compliant and highly efficient international supply chain.

Lucy caught up with many familiar faces from the freight forwarding sector and it was exciting to see some big freight companies already rolling out robotics to speed up fulfillment, reduce errors and ease the strain on manual labour.

FTA / APSA - IN THE MEDIA

DCN - OPINION: China's maritime shift & its consequences for Australian shippers

Tom Jensen, General Manager - Freight Policy & Operations FTA | APSA said "There is a growing shift underway in China's maritime policy settings that, while not yet widely understood, has the potential to significantly reshape risk allocation across global supply chains — with Australian shippers firmly in the firing line."

What is changing in practical terms is the treatment of cargo where issues arise at destination. Historically, Chinese authorities and local receiving parties have carried a significant role in managing non-compliant, misdeclared or abandoned shipments once the cargo has arrived. READ MORE
