Who does this notice affect?
This notice affects importers of citrus fruit, brokers and Pathway Operations Cargo – Assessments and Inspections.
What has changed?
Import conditions to import fresh pomelo fruit from Viet Nam, for human consumption, are now published on BICON.
The import conditions are based on the Pomelo fruit from Vietnam: biosecurity import requirements final report.
To achieve the appropriate level of protection for Australia, fresh pomelos from Viet Nam must:
- be produced under a systems approach at approved and registered orchards and packing houses to manage Asian citrus psyllid and citrus canker
- undergo pre-export irradiation treatment at an approved facility to manage quarantine fruit flies, mealybugs, scale insects and false spider mite, and
- be inspected and certified by the NPPO of Viet Nam to ensure the goods are free from pests of concern to Australia and have been produced in accordance with Australia's requirements.
A valid permit is required to import fresh pomelos from Viet Nam and must be issued by the department before the fruit is shipped to Australia.
An import permit may be obtained by submitting an import permit application to the department through BICON (use the 'Apply Now' button at the bottom of the BICON case).
