FTA / APSA seek Government assistance for Australian exporters
FTA / APSA have made a
formal approach
to the Prime Minister requesting that the Australian Government introduce targeted financial assistance for Australian exporters to offset emergency conflict, war risk and deviation surcharges.
Paul Zalai, Director - FTA | secretariat APSA, said "
Surcharges create an immediate cashflow shock, often resulting in budget overspend in the current accounting period. Smaller exporters, particularly in agriculture and regional Australia, face escalating cashflow crises that threaten business continuity"
We would also direct members to the two submissions noted below

Brisbane catch up
Tom Jensen
recently caught up over lunch with
Carle van Schalkwyk
and
Jenna Ryan
from the wonderful team at
LOGWIN AG
in Brisbane.
It is always refreshing to spend time with people who not only understand the logistics game — but are actively shaping how it evolves.
Logwin continues to stand out as a global logistics provider with a strong footprint across key trade lanes and it's clear their Brisbane team is playing an important role in that story.
It's teams like this that keep freight moving when the rest of the world feels like it's wobbling.

Westpac International Trade Matters Series
John Park
attended yet another informative Westpac International Trade Matters Series Breakfast yesterday in Perth, the range of speakers and panelists never disappoints and today was no exception - we heard from
Cassandra Winzenried
, Chief Economist at Export Finance Australia, Pamela Currie, Diretor WA State Office, DFAT and
Amanda Bradfield
, Director at endtoend logistics.
All the topics were very pertinent given the geo political actions going on around the world, and the signing of the Australia | EU trade agreement and of course the logistics world never ceases to throw curve balls -thanks also to
Darryl Daisley
who joined the panel at Q&A time (pictured left to right - Cassandra, Amanda, Pamela and Darryl)
FTA / APSA - IN THE MEDIA
The Australian - War-wounded meat, vegetable exporters plead for help as Iran conflict leaves cargo, sheep stranded
An article in
The Australian
has highlighted the deepening crisis facing Australian exporters as Middle East conflict throws key supply chains into disarray, with cargo stranded, rerouted, delayed or abandoned mid-transit and exporters hit with crippling war risk, fuel and deviation surcharges.
FTA Director
Paul Zalai
said:"
These impacts are compounded by 'end-of-voyage' declarations, where shipping lines terminate contractual responsibilities mid-route, often accompanied by deviation surcharges … Cargo owners then bear the full cost of recovery, storage, rehandling and onward movement."

DCN - Exporters call for 'financial assistance' as war rages in the Middle East
SIGNIFICANT, unbudgeted costs arising from shipping disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict have prompted calls from exporters for "targeted financial assistance".
In a letter
to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) wrote that the conflict underscored "a clear market imbalance", where external shocks such as pandemics and wars transferred "disproportionate costs and risks" onto the Australian trade sector.
FTA director and APSA secretariat Paul Zalai said exporters had little practical ability to mitigate or avoid these impacts.

Operations changes help boost Pilbara Ports
OPERATIONAL changes have helped Pilbara Ports to a total monthly throughput of 55.9 million tonnes (Mt) during February 2026, a 13% increase on February 2025.
A Pilbara Ports statement said operational changes include revised vessel movement guidelines for ebb-tide departures, and
creating sailing opportunities for larger vessels had improved efficiency.
"Together with ongoing improvements to Dynamic Under Keel Clearance (DUKC), these changes have enabled vessels to make best advantage of available sailing windows, safely maximise cargo and contribute to increased overall shipping volumes," the statement said.

Lithium-ion battery incidents in air cargo on the rise
The new report suggests that the air cargo industry has seen a 40% increase in the number of thermal runaway incidents since 2021.
In 2021, there were 10 incidents, the UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) report found, but this had increased to 14 incidents by 2025. There were 13 incidents in 2022, 13 in 2023 and 15 in 2024.
The researcher described the rise as "alarming" and said it mirrored increasing consumer demand for low-cost, battery-powered products.
