Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) continue to keep members informed of developments impacting Australia's international supply chains.

Expressions of interest are open for a proposed rail incentive linked to the Melbourne Intermodal Terminal at Somerton.

The incentive is intended to support the establishment of base load import volumes during the initial operational phase of the MIT and to encourage early uptake of port rail shuttle services.

The Melbourne Intermodal Terminal (MIT) at Somerton is a new inland intermodal facility operated by Intermodal Terminal Company (ITC), providing a daily direct rail connection between the Port of Melbourne and Melbourne's northern logistics precinct. The terminal is designed to support increased intermodal capacity and facilitate a mode shift from road to rail for containerised freight.

Under the current proposal, an incentive of $100 per TEU and $200 per FEU is being contemplated for import containers moved by rail from the Port of Melbourne to the MIT facility at Somerton. Any incentive arrangement would be subject to time and volume limitations.

Registrations can be made at Port Rail Shuttle Network (PRSN) Incentive Program - Registration of Interest
