DAFF Honours Sal Milici for Outstanding Biosecurity Leadership

I am delighted to advise members that Sal Milici (General Manager Trade Policy & Operations - FTA/APSA) has been formally recognised by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) in the 2025 Australian Biosecurity Awards for "dedicated efforts in advancing biosecurity awareness across the international freight and logistics sector" - further detail available HERE

A tremendous recognition for Sal's unwavering leadership, industry advocacy and long-standing commitment to strengthening Australia's biosecurity framework.

Meeting with the Inspector-General of Biosecurity

Sal Milici earlier today in Melbourne represented Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) in a meeting with Inspector-General of Biosecurity (IGB), Dr Melissa McEwan, for a constructive discussion on the IGB's forthcoming annual review work plan.

The meeting followed the release of the IGB's recent system-wide assessment of regulatory maturity within Australia's national biosecurity framework. The review drew on departmental data, documentation and confidential staff feedback, identifying a number of areas where greater transparency, consistency and clarity would strengthen the overall compliance system. Themes included variable enforcement outcomes, limited visibility of non-compliance handling, and gaps in managing repeat or high-risk behaviours. The report emphasised that improving these aspects is essential to maintaining confidence in the regulatory approach and ensuring the system can respond effectively to evolving biosecurity threats.

These observations align with long-standing FTA and APSA advocacy for a strong, fair and predictable compliance regime—one that protects Australia from biosecurity risks while supporting legitimate trade and ensuring compliant operators are not placed at a commercial disadvantage. Members continues to demonstrate this commitment through accurate reporting, technical expertise and proactive engagement with DAFF.

The discussion with the IGB provided an opportunity to share insights from across the supply chain, highlight operational realities, and outline practical measures that could enhance transparency and consistency. FTA and APSA look forward to ongoing engagement as the IGB finalises the 2024–25 work plan and progresses further reviews aimed at strengthening system-wide performance.
