CEO's message

Image
Welcome to this month's edition of Port of Brisbane News.

As we head towards the end of 2023, projects are continuing to support improvements and efficiencies across the Port.

Our teams have recently completed road pavement improvement works on Osprey Drive within our Port Gate estate, while around 100kms beyond the 'port gate', Stage 4 of our offsite stormwater project is underway in the Lockyer Valley.

Property development continues including a 'sod turning' event  for our new customer, Electrolux Group, in Stage 2 of our Port West Estate.

We've also been out supporting the community, with PBPL volunteers travelling to Minjerribah – North Stradbroke Island – to support the annual Quandamooka Jarjums Camp.

Property development update

Last month we were delighted to cut the ribbon on a new facility for iOR in our Port Gate Estate, part of iOR's broader terminal upgrade project which included the Lytton Fuel Terminal's opening in July.

Work is underway to upgrade the facility of our long-standing customer, Toll Group, including a replacement and expansion of container hardstand, truck manoeuvring areas, ISO tank bunded areas, service upgrades and office refurbishment. Work will be completed in stages through to mid-2024. ?

Construction is progressing well on the new Rogers Transport facility at Port West, with the steel frame, roof and external walls installed. The facility is anticipated to complete in early-2024, weather permitting. ?

Sod turned at Electrolux Group site

It was fantastic to be joined by our new customer, Electrolux Group, alongside Principal Contractor McNab, to turn the sod at their 4.22ha site within our Port West Estate Stage 2, ahead of construction commencing on their new Port of Brisbane home!

The first tenant in Stage 2 of the Estate, Electrolux's state-of-the-art development will include a distribution centre and modern Experience Centre, and will target a 6-Star Green-Star rating – the first for PBPL.

Key project partners include JohnstaffJLLSparc*AcorNorthrop Consulting Engineers  and Douglas Partners Pty Ltd. Read more on our website.

QBH export milestones

Congratulations to New Hope Corporation, who during October railed its first coal from New Acland Coal Stage 3 Expansion to the Port, to be handled by our customer Queensland Bulk Handling (QBH). The trainload from Jondaryan was New Acland mine's first consignment of coal in more than two years.

Also last month, the first export shipment from the reopened Wilkie Creek coal mine was loaded at QBH. Wilkie Creek was recently purchased and put back into production by New Wilkie Energy (NWE), after the previous owners closed production in 2013.

Osprey Drive improvement works complete

Works were completed in October on a full depth rehabilitation of the road pavement along the length of Osprey Drive, as well as the resurfacing of a section of Kite Street. ?

Our Infrastructure team worked with Principal Contractor PPQ to re-purpose all asphalt profiling and gravel on other PPQ projects, significantly reducing CO2 emissions, as well as using solar to power the lighting towers, VMS boards and speed display trailers. ?

Offsite Stormwater project continues

We recently commenced the fourth stage of our offsite stormwater project in the Lockyer Valley, working with our partner Healthy Land & Water to rehabilitate a 650m section of Laidley Creek. Once completed, this will take the total length Creek rehabilitated to 3.3 km since 2015.

Developed in 2015, our Offsite Stormwater Masterplan ensures our work in the Lockyer Valley is staged and targeted and adds to the two additional projects completed with Brisbane and Ipswich Councils.

Bingera Drive extension open

Construction on the Bingera Drive Storage Yard – a new 2.6ha casual lease storage yard – has been completed. The works also included the straightening of Bingera Drive to meet Port Drive, which is now open to all road users.

Quandamooka Jarjums Camp

We were again proud to support the annual Quandamooka Jarjums Camp held at Cylinder Beach campground on Minjerribah – North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. PBPL volunteers came together with Elders and local Bayside teachers and principals for a day of traditional performances and food, as well as a fantastic yarn.

The Indigenous cultural immersion program hosts students from Dunwich State School and schools from across the Bayside area.

$100k funding boost for Bayside education partners

We were delighted to present two of our Bayside-based education partners, Tangalooma EcoMarines and Moreton Bay Environment Education Centre, with a cheque for $50,000 each last month.

Hundreds more school students are expected to visit Fisherman Islands through their port education tour programs in 2024 as a result of the funding boost. Read more here.

Port of Brisbane employee celebration

Our team came together in October to celebrate our annual Employee Awards. This year, we recognised the contribution and achievements of our people across six categories including Safety, Integrity, Innovation, Teamwork, Accountability and Leadership.

Congratulations to all our finalists and award winners! You can see a highlight reel from the evening here.

AMIC Conference 2023

We were very proud to again be a sponsor of this year's AMIC Meat Processing and Export Conference, which brings together supply chain partners from across Australia.

Delegates enjoyed a tour here at the Port of Brisbane. We are grateful to Patrick Terminals for treating the delegation to a truly unique experience, with a guided bus tour alongside the quay line, where the Auto Straddles could be seen in operation.

Lord Mayor's Business Awards

Now in our ninth year of sponsoring the Lord Mayor's Business Awards, we were delighted to again sponsor the Young Business Person of the Year category, celebrating outstanding individuals aged 35 and under, who have achieved significant success for their company and the city of Brisbane.

Congratulations to all finalists and to the winner Mathew Allan, CTO and co-founder of Australian Droid and Robot (ADR). To check out the highlights package, click here.
