International freight and logistics decarbonisation update

Thursday, June 29, 2023

Decarbonation of the freight and logistics sector continues to gain momentum.

In a domestic sense Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) is representing members as part of MERNAP Consultative Group.

On the global front the International Maritime Organisation will convene MEPC 80 next week (3-7 July) where it is expected to adopt an upgraded IMO greenhouse gas strategy.

The revised IMO GHG Strategy will contain concrete greenhouse gas reduction targets for the sector and is expected to outline a basket of technical and economic measures to be developed to set global shipping on an ambitious path towards phasing out greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally the European Union has published draft regulations governing the implementation of its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. The draft regulations cover the transitional phase, which starts on 1 October this year and runs until the end of 2025. The draft regulations are open for public consultation until 11 July 2023.
