CEO's message

Welcome to this month's edition of Port News.

The start to the new financial year has been a busy one around the Port community.

While severe weather hindered port access for several days, trade remains strong, with exports significantly on the rise.

I'm proud to share that in line with our aspirations to be a sustainability leader in the ports and logistics industry, PBPL has been recognised as a Bronze level Carbon Literate Organisation by The Carbon Literacy Project – the first port globally to achieve this accreditation.

Our property development teams are delivering a number of new facilities for customers around the port precinct, with works progressing well.

And finally, with COVID-19 continuing to remain front of mind, we continue to encourage everyone to follow the advice and directives of the Queensland Government to help keep the community safe. As a result of the current COVID 'peak', we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Safety 1 Forum, which was due to be held later this month. A new date will be announced shortly.

Trade Update

Cotton exports increased significantly in June following a disrupted start to the season due to ongoing rain events and supply chain disruption. June exports reached 6,500TEU – an increase of 143% against the same period last year.

To date, the largest export markets for cotton shipped through the Port of Brisbane this year include Vietnam, Indonesia and India.

Port of Brisbane typically handles approximately 50% of Australia's cotton throughout every year and with 2022 expected to be Australia's largest production year on record, we anticipate strong cotton export volumes to continue through the Port.

Our first ten cruise calls

It's been two months since cruising resumed in Queensland and we welcomed our first cruise ship to the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal on 2 June. Since that time, we've welcomed 10 cruise ships and thousands of passengers through the world class facility.

In August we look forward to welcoming the Pacific Encounter on her maiden voyage, with cruise ship calls increasing over the coming months ahead of the new cruise season from 1 October.

PBPL a Carbon Literate Organisation

We are proud to share that PBPL has been awarded Carbon Literate Organisation Bronze Accreditation, granted by The Carbon Literacy Project, a global organisation leading carbon literacy training worldwide.

We are the first port in the world to receive a Carbon Literate Bronze Accreditation and the second organisation globally in the infrastructure/transport sector.

We were also recognised by the Carbon Literacy Project as having the largest carbon literate workforce in Australia to date. In total, 52 employees—approximately 30% of our workforce—have completed the training, including members of our Executive Team and CEO as well as several Board members.

Property development

Work is progressing well on the MEDLOG facility we are delivering on Fisherman Island. Stage 1 of the facility is advancing rapidly with substantial completion of the container storage hardstand. Erection of the steel frames for the buildings is now underway. McNab has commenced site preparation for stage 2.

We have also commenced work on a site expansion for our existing customer, Mondiale VGL, with earthworks now underway.  The first container pavement slabs will be poured in the coming weeks, weather permitting.

Health and safety

As we are all aware, we are currently experiencing a 'peak' of COVID-19 infections in the community. As a result of the current COVID 'peak', we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Safety 1 Forum, which was due to be held later this month. A new date will be announced shortly.

PBPL would like to encourage all our port community to follow Queensland Government health guidelines to help keep our community safe.
