CEO's message

Welcome to this month's edition of Port News.

We look forward to seeing the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal utilised to it's full capacity and welcoming a vast number of passengers and vessels over the coming months.

Congratulations to everyone who helped raise the $25,000 donated to our 2021/2022 employee charity, Foodbank Queensland. With our donation, they will be able to provide 50,000 meals to Queenslanders facing hardship right now.

I encourage you to save the date for our upcoming Safety 1 Forum which will be on the 24th August.

Trade Update

Over FY22 the bulk agricultural sector recorded strong volumes, exporting a record 1.83 million tonnes of cereals and grain through the Port of Brisbane exceeding the previous record of 1.74 million tonnes achieved in FY13. This reaffirms the resilience of the industry which has endured a prolonged drought period and a significant fall in bulk grain exports in FY20 when only 10,800 tonnes were exported and huge tonnages of grain were imported through the Port of Brisbane to support feedlots in Queensland and northern NSW.

Wheat exports had an exceptionally strong year overall, accounting for 83% of the total volume of bulk agricultural exports with shipments distributed to over 12 different markets. Continued favourable climatic conditions has the forthcoming winter crop anticipating another favourable year and analysts are expecting Australian growers will again look to plant wheat in high volumes to capitalise on the strong global demand.

Cruise

It's fantastic to see cruising back!

On 16 June, we welcomed the Coral Princess on her maiden voyage to the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT). The Coral Princess will homeport in Brisbane through the winter months.

October marks start of the new 2022/23 cruise season, and with around 170 vessels currently confirmed, the BICT will be welcoming thousands of cruise passengers to our city and state. Find out more about the BICT and the full cruise schedule on our website.

Environment

As part of planning for the maintenance of the Future Port Expansion (FPE) area's outer rockwall, we sought to minimise the impact of the works on the migratory shorebirds that regularly visit the site.

The Grey-tailed Tattler, a rare migratory shorebird, can often be seen in large numbers on the perimeter seawall during our summer months to rest and feed, before they return to their northern hemisphere breeding grounds.

Their areas of preferential roosting were avoided during the critical summer months with buffers put in place to minimise disturbance and the design avoided materials such as dirt, which can encourage weed growth that the birds don't like. Monitoring over the summer months identified no impact to the roosting birds (629 birds recorded in March 2022), with evidence that the birds were moving into the newly repaired areas.

Community

Last month we welcomed Petra Stanton from Foodbank Queensland, our 2021/22 Employee Charity, to present her with a $25,000 donation from the PBPL team.

Led by our Charity Committee, the amount raised was truly a team effort, achieved through fundraising efforts including recycling scrap metal, Containers for Change program, sausage sizzles, raffles, chocolate sales and individual staff donations.  We also thank our customers and stakeholders who completed the 2021 Pulse Check Survey, with PBPL donating $50 for each completed survey.

The Port of Brisbane dollar-matched all fundraising effort.

Foodbank Queensland does an amazing job to help feed Queenslanders in need. To find out more about what they do, or to support their important work, please visit their website

Health and safety

Road safety is a high priority at the Port of Brisbane, and we continue to work collaboratively with road authorities and our stakeholders to improve safety on port roads. Initiatives delivered by PBPL include the $110 million Port Drive Upgrade, which included significant road safety benefits, our annual Safety 1 Forum, and other communications.

From 1 July, Queensland Police introduced tougher penalties to discourage dangerous driving such as speeding, failure to wear a correctly fitted seatbelt, and disobeying traffic lights.  More information is available on the
QPS website.

It is imperative that all road users obey all Queensland road rules on port roads, and wherever you are. We ask all road users to take particular care on the roads these school holidays.

This year's Safety 1 Forum will be held at the Multi-User Terminal, Port of Brisbane on Wednesday 24 August, with a focus on Road safety.

All are welcome to attend.

More information will be available soon.
