National Biosecurity Strategy Reference Group

Monday, November 15, 2021

We are delighted to advise the appointment of Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA), joining other peak industry bodies, to the recently formed National Biosecurity Strategy Reference Group.

The group will seek to align our collective efforts to safeguard biosecurity risks whilst facilitating international trade, providing a clear commitment to prioritised action and investment. This will ensure the system remains fit to meet the challenges of the next decade.

In addition to our direct strategic engagement with the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (the department) and panel involvement in forums such as the ministerial-led Biosecurity Futures and now the National Biosecurity Strategy Reference Group., we are escalating our focus on immediate operational needs.

As outlined in our member notice on 10 November 2021 and discussed with members at our Melbourne customs broker CPD events (11 and 13 November 2021), we are having direct bi-lateral discussions with the department in terms of the ongoing delays in document assessment and the potential reform of inspections.

FTA is focussed on delivering necessary interim relief measures and longer term sustainable reforms. To that end, we appreciate suggestions provided by delegates at last weeks' events and encourage further feedback on practical reforms – please forward views direct to me at smilici@FTAlliance.com.au
