Third employee at Melbourne Terminal with COVID-19

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) received the following update overnight from Patrick Terminals: 

Despite a request to the Maritime Union of Australia to return to the table to finalise an enterprise agreement, they have chosen to issue further industrial action notifications for Patrick Terminals - Sydney AutoStrad. These notifications are listed below in bold.

In addition to this notification, we advise that a third member of our Melbourne Terminal team has tested positive for COVID. Contact tracing is underway with the assistance of DHHS and close and casual contacts have been notified. Once again, this positive COVID case and the increasing number of employees required to isolate for the 14-day period will impact our operational capability at our Melbourne Terminal. Our terminal continues to operate with reduced crews.

Michael Jovicic, CEO Patrick Terminals, said, "We provided the MUA with a clear path to resolve this dispute during this very challenging time for our organisation and for Australia. It is highly disappointing that instead of showing a willingness to negotiate an agreement, they have chosen to issue our business with further industrial action notifications. There was a clear path to have the necessary discussions to reach an agreement. We urge the MUA to call off its ongoing and damaging industrial action and work proactively towards achieving a mutually beneficial enterprise agreement."

Terminal Operations Update

Patrick Terminals - Sydney AutoStrad
  • The current delays at the Sydney terminal are as follows:
    • On window vessels - 4.3 days
    • Off window vessels - 5.1 days
  • DP World has no short term capacity to take sub-contracts, however, capacity may become available mid-month 
  • Hutchinson has no capacity to take sub-contracts

Patrick Terminals - Brisbane AutoStrad
  • The terminal is currently experiencing low-level impact from industrial action
  • Upcoming terminal stoppages due to industrial action may cause increased delays.
     
Patrick Terminals - Fremantle
  • The terminal is now being impacted by industrial action and vessel bunching
  • The result is that delays are increasing for certain vessels up to 7 days
  • DP World has no capacity for sub-contracting until at least mid-October
     
Patrick Terminals - Melbourne
  • Our Melbourne terminal schedule is busy with back to back vessels for the month of October
  • Vessels are currently berthing up to 4 days behind schedule. We continue to work with reduced labour availability due to COVID isolation requirements for close contacts. 
  • VICTL has no capacity for sub-contracting due to positive COVID cases and employee isolation requirements
  • DP World will support Patrick Terminals with subcontracting opportunities at the end of next week to assist in alleviating delays.
