Boating infrastructure delivered—13 not unlucky for boaties in 2020/21
A message from Andrew Mahon, Acting General Manager

The pandemic has made life challenging for all of us in many ways, not the least of which is finding safe ways to preserve our health and sanity while staving off the threat of COVID-19 outbreaks through lockdowns, social distancing and other mitigation measures.

Thankfully, when undertaken in line with the health advice, recreational boating is proving for many Queenslanders to be a very effective way to get some much needed outdoor respite from the pressures this creates.

And I'm pleased to say the pandemic has not stopped MSQ delivering new and upgraded boat launching facilities to better cater for Queensland's boating enthusiasts.

Here is a recap of the major outcomes from our Boating Infrastructure Program for the 2020/21 financial year and a sneak preview of what is to come.

MSQ ramps up marine pollution audits of declared ships

Do you own or operate a domestic commercial vessel with a fixed toilet that is a passenger vessel or a hire and drive vessel in Queensland?

MSQ is prioritising an audit of such vessels for compliance with Queensland's marine pollution legislation.

MSQ boat harbours strategic review

As a part of our Boat Harbours Strategic Direction Project MSQ invites users and lessees of the eight boat harbours we manage to help us guide their future direction.

The eight boat harbours are located at Manly, Cabbage Tree Creek, Scarborough, Mooloolaba, Snapper Creek (Tin Can Bay), Urangan, Rosslyn Bay (Yeppoon) and Bowen.

Key FNQ beacons set for overhaul

Mariners of all vessels operating in the far north Queensland ports of Cairns and Weipa will soon benefit from a multi-million-dollar investment in upgraded beacons in those ports.

Derelict vessels - act promptly or risk paying more later

MSQ's support for the state government's War on Wrecks remains strong as derelict vessels continue to be removed from waterways.

We've recently had an outcome through the courts that established an important principle regarding owner's accepting legal responsibilities. The lesson is clear—if owners don't act early they run the risk of paying more dearly later.

Did you know?

National Safe Boating Week runs from Saturday 2 October to Friday 8 October. Check the Australia New Zealand Safe Boating Education Group website for more details and safety tips.

MSQ has a new suite of educational materials to help personal watercraft operators stay safe on the water under the "further information" heading here.

MSQ has completed a full update of the Beacon to Beacon Guide titled "Moreton Bay". The update includes new hydrographic surveys where available, navigation aids and more. Locate and download your free copy here.

Standards Australia has released a revised draft of lifejacket Standard AS4758 for public comment until 11 October 2021. You'll need to register for a Standards Australia account to access the draft Standard. MSQ endorses the wearing of lifejackets. Too many recent boating tragedies involved boaties not doing so.
