Patrick Melbourne Terminal - Implementation of PONDUS Container Weighing Stand

Patrick Terminals has announced that its PONDUS stand container weighing solution will be implemented in its Melbourne East Swanson Dock (ESD) Terminal from 4 October 2021.

The initiative is designed to address the safety implications that mis-declared shipping containers pose to vessel safety, as well as to safe, mass compliant landside transport.

Patrick has advised that both import and export containers will be sampled for weighing on the PONDUS stand.

Any mis-declared container found to be outside of a +/- 1-tonne tolerance (compared with the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) data provided to Patrick via EDI by the shipping line) will be charged a Weight Amendment Fee of AUD $230.00 per container (+GST).

For import containers, the Fee will be levied through the transport operator (for onforwarding to the importer), while for export containers, the shipping line will be charged (with onforwarding to the exporter).

CTAA has produced a Notice to Industry with more information, including background to the PONDUS Stand trials and initial implementation at the Patrick Brisbane Terminal earlier this year,  how the Weight Amendment Fee and PONDUS weight certificate will be notified to transport operators, how/when the Fee is to be paid, and information about weight discrepancy disputes which have arisen.
