Combined FTA & CTAA Media Release - Peak industry bodies call for a blanket exemption on container detention penalties.pdf

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has been inundated with examples from members frustrated by shipping line responses declining requests for extensions to container detention periods.

This evidence has highlighted that it is clearly no longer satisfactory for shipping lines to simply say they will consider outcomes on a 'case by case' basis.

In the current extreme Port Botany landside operating environment, blanket extensions to detention free periods and viable operational empty container dehire solutions are required.

Shipping line imposed penalties and surcharges are increasingly being exposed as opportunistic pricing mechanisms of captive customers reliant on service providers enjoying a near-monopolistic position in the market, with little incentive to tackle the causes or the scale of the additional costs.

In order to expose this matter, FTA has collaborated with the Container Transport Alliance Australia (CTAA) in preparing a the following media release.
