Border Requirements and Essential Services

Thursday, April 9, 2020

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) members have asked for further information about national and domestic border requirements, including clarification of how the term 'essential services' applies to restrictions on the movement of people and goods across borders, and possible exemptions to those restrictions.

It is important to note that what constitutes an essential service has not been defined by the Australian Government.

Each State and Territory determines the movement of people and goods across their borders, and make their own decisions around essential services and exemptions as they see fit.

Putting things and context and giving a level of security for members, we are pleased to refer to the Australian Border Force (ABF) advice received today "Government is aware of the complex nature of the supply chains that underpin businesses across Australia and we recognise Australian traders, customs brokers, freight forwarders and service providers are critical to these supply chains functioning."

Finally, I would like to thank all FTA / APSA members and sponsors for all your support - together we have been able to work with government and are achieving some very productive results – more to come next week.
