FREMANTLE PORTS' NEWSLETTER 3 APRIL | 2020

 COVID-19 and the port

Fremantle Ports remains committed to the health and safety of our community, employees, port users and service providers. We are guided by the Australian Department of Health and Australian Border Force's introduced measures at ports nationally to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The good news is that trade can continue. Ships of all kinds continue to come and go from the Port of Fremantle, which is great news for Western Australia at a critical time. We want trade to continue, of course, and the community needs this critical link for essential supplies. To ensure business continuity, we are actively taking measures to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Those precautions are being taken at every level of our organisation in response to the latest advice from government.

Dealing with arrangements for cruise ships at the Port of Fremantle has presented challenges in the past few weeks. Fremantle Ports has been working closely with the cruise companies, the crew of the ships, and State and Federal Government authorities. We have followed all directions from the authorities and our employees have responded well during this demanding time. We appreciate the community's support and thank you.

COVID-19 arrangements

Container, break-bulk and bulk trades are all continuing. All ships must provide pre-arrival health and quarantine information that is checked by Australian authorities. Ships from overseas that have received clearance by the authorities can berth in the port if they have been fewer than 14 days at sea but crew must isolate on the ship once berthed. There is currently no shore leave for any crew. To ensure ongoing trade and supply of goods, international maritime crew change-outs are permitted nationally but crew must adhere to the 14-day quarantine period.

Deepest-draft ship visits

The deepest-draft ship ever to leave Fremantle Harbour, container ship MSC Sindy, left on 30 March. The 336.7m MSC Sindy has a draft (depth under water or distance from waterline to bottom of keel) of 14.6m. While the harbour is dredged to 14.7m, a high tide of one metre made it possible for the ship to transit safely. The displacement of Sindy was 138,820 tonnes. Laden with containers, it was headed for Singapore. Fremantle can handle the largest container ships visiting Australia, a critical factor for WA as we continue facilitating trade at a very important time.

How mussels monitor water quality

Fremantle Ports' annual marine quality monitoring program field sampling has been completed with mussels playing an important role helping us to understand the health of the marine ecosystem. Mussels are filter feeders, each processing about a bathtub of water a day. A total of about 900 mussels were deployed at 15 sample sites located at Blackwall Reach (Swan River), the Fremantle Inner Harbour and in Cockburn Sound at the Kwinana Bulk Jetty and Kwinana Bulk Terminal.
