"coronavirus" impact at the Border - Update 1

Thursday, January 30, 2020

Following on from our earlier mail campaign on the coronavirus, Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) had received commentary from members as to possible impacts at container terminals with the servicing of vessels.

FTA have taken the opportunity to speak to all container terminal operators (CTOs) , the Department of Agriculture (the department) and have also noted the comments from the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMMEU).

Whilst different entities may have in place internal procedures to manage the interactions with people, aircraft and vessels arriving from overseas there was one consistent commentary from all and that was the protection of their staff and the wider community. Actions which FTA fully support.

At this time it would appear that all the entities that we spoke with are deferring to the regulatory obligations on vessel operators to furnish the department with a range of statements prior to arrival. These statements include matters relating to crew, health and ballast water etc.

Based on these statements the department, no doubt in conjunction with the Department of Health, would determine what actions need to be taken in collaboration with the vessel operators and other affected parties. In some instances these steps may or may not impact on vessel operations and cargo availability.

In terms of airfreight, members have reported that they have experienced significant cancellations this week with capacity anticipated to be impacted with reporting that airlines will start reducing services.

FTA will continue to advise members on pertinent updates as they come to hand.
