TasPorts to keep King Island shipping service long term after receiving no suitable proposals

By Lachlan Bennett The Examiner 29th July 2019

TasPorts will continue to operate its King Island shipping business Bass Island Line after it was unable to find a suitable commercial operator to take it over.

Current and potential Bass Strait shippers were invited to submit proposals to help deliver BIL in April following an initial market sounding process in late 2018.

TasPorts chief executive Anthony Donald said a decision was made to not shortlist any market participants following "an extensive evaluation process" by a panel of TasPorts, BIL and the Department of State Growth represent

"This decision was taken on the basis that the evaluation panel considered none of the market participants sufficiently demonstrated that their proposals were able to independently achieve an improved BIL Service outcome without substantial ongoing involvement and support from TasPorts," he said.

Mr Donald said TasPorts had now committed to retain and enhance BIL into the long-term future.

TasPorts was tasked with setting up a King Island shipping service after the collapse of a commercial shipping arrangement involving SeaRoad and Port and Coastal Marine Service in late 2016.

TT Line keeps options open for others to build new Spirit of Tasmania vessels

By Lachlan Bennttt The Examiner 20th June 2019

Embattled shipbuilder Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft may still construct the new Spirit of Tasmania vessels but TT-Line is keeping its options open.

TT-Line has been meeting with FSG following revelations it was recently bailed-out from near-bankruptcy by German investors and reports of an exodus of engineers.

Minister for Infrastructure Jeremy Rockliff said TT-Line had advised the government this week it was continuing discussions with FSG amid fear the new Spirits could be delayed.

"A contract with FSG remains in place and detailed design work is progressing, however, TT-Line is also continuing to have discussions with other shipbuilders in case the situation changes," Mr Rockliff said.

"... It is important to note that no money has changed hands and the Tasmanian Government will not pay one cent until there are assurances around FSG's capacity to fulfil the contract and a refund guarantee is in place."

Labor accused Mr Rockliff on misleading Tasmania on the delivery date for the new Spirits after their concerns were dismissed when raised during Estimates for the past two years.

Shadow Minister for Roads and Infrastructure David O'Byrne said Mr Rockliff needed to admit when he first knew the ferries would not be delivered.

"It is clear that Jeremy Rockliff lied to the Estimates Committee and the Parliament about the chaotic state of the replacement vessel project," he said.

Victorian Coastal Shipping Review Underway

Plans are now underway to develop the Victorian Ports Strategy, which will include an industry-led review into Victorian coastal shipping aimed at maximising opportunities for local jobs and further investment in the industry

The decision to develop a new Victorian Ports Strategy was made last year as part of the Victorian Freight Plan – Delivering the Goods. The freight plan also established Freight Victoria, a one stop shop for Victoria's freight industry, laying out a blueprint to grow our economy, create jobs and take more trucks off local roads.

As part of the development of the port strategy, the Victorian Government also requested a review into Victorian coastal shipping to augment the recent national inquiry to coastal shipping.
