Can Fremantle handle bigger ships? Yes, we can!
Two of the largest-capacity container ships to ever visit Australia visited Fremantle in July. Capable of carrying 9400 standard containers each—double the number on most container ships visiting Australia—Maersk Skarstind and MSC Elma were each about 300 metres long and 48 metres wide. To compare, Optus Stadium's AFL field is 165 m long.
Record high freight on rail
More than 20 per cent of containers were transported to the port by rail in 2018-19, taking 110,000 truck movements off the road. A record high of 23.7 per cent rail share was achieved in April. Fremantle has the highest share of containers on rail in Australia.
Vasco da Gamaheading to Fremantle

Homeporting means there is a complete passenger exchange when the ship calls here (1220 passengers arriving and another 1220 departing).
