As outlined in previous Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (ASPSA) notices in terms of the biosecurity imports levy, the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources released a media statement on 24 February 2019 addressing industry concerns.

In his statement the minister announced the establishment of an industry steering committee to provide him with advice on these matters. Last week, the minister announced the chair and members of the steering committee.

Mr David Trebeck will serve as the independent chair, with the following steering committee members confirmed:

  • Paul Zalai, Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA)

  • Margie Thomson, Cement Industry Federation

  • Mike Gallacher, Ports Australia

  • Rod Nairn AM, Shipping Australia

  • Brian Lovell, Australian Federation of International Forwarders (AFIF)

  • Tony Mahar, National Farmers' Federation

  • Michael Sousa, Qube Holdings

  • Peter Gniel, Australian Institute of Petroleum

  • Joel Katz, Cruise Lines International Association Australasia

The steering committee will have its first meeting tomorrow in Canberra, hosted by the National Farmers' Federation. The steering committee will incorporate members' feedback and external submissions into deliberations prior to providing advice to the minister.
