FTA / APSA brings the debate on global container detention reform to Australian shores

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) look forward to collaboration with global partners to see what we can learn from the US to combat the unfair use of container detention charges on Australian traders and logistics companies.

The Global Shippers Forum is proud to announce Rebecca Dye, Commissioner of the Federal Maritime Commission of the United States, as a keynote speaker at the upcoming Global Shippers Forum to be held in Melbourne on 10 May and 11 May 2018.

The Commissioner will be presenting on supply chain visibility and performance, and will provide an update on the ongoing investigations into container detention and demurrage.

Commissioner Rebecca Dye was first appointed by President George W Bush and confirmed by the United States Senate on 14 November 2002.

The FMC has established an Inquiry into detention and demurrage practices after a long term campaign by beneficial cargo owners, known as the "Coalition for Fair Port Practices".

The Commissioner will be joining presenters from the World Bank, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the World Customs Organisation.

The Global Shippers Forum is the global peak body for cargo owners. This year's event is hosted by FTA, APSA and the International Cargo Handling Coordination Association (ICHCA) ... read more

Unlocking value across the container logistics supply chain

Transport inefficiencies that start at the terminal gate have a flow-on effect right across the container logistics supply chain, trapping value and depressing profitability for all involved.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

Connecting the community of container depots and terminals, cargo owners, shipping lines, and road transporters, Containerchain solutions support synchronised communication and operational predictability.

Features include real-time paperless tracking, frictionless information exchange, process automation, and optimised asset utilisation - as well as total container movement visibility for more proactive planning. The result is lowered cost of operations and improved profitability for one of the world's most essential industries.

Weekly Market Commentary

US corporate earnings are underway and are beating expectations but the overachievement is priced in! Markets took the strong numbers in their stride and equities drifted lower after a bullish week. The important University of Michigan Sentiment report slipped of record levels but remains unparalleled. The US lead Coalition continues to defer possible action in Syria, but this remains a live grenade, which could trigger strong market reaction.

Shipping goes green - what it means for industry

DCN - Monday 16 April 2018

by Travis Brooks-Garrett - FTA / APSA

AFTER much debate and speculation, the global shipping industry has committed to cutting its emissions by at least half of its 2008 level by 2050. It is a historical decision that will have real operational impacts for the international trade sector. Without mitigation measures, pollution from shipping was predicted to increase by 250% in the same period. While some countries objected to the draft (specifically the US and Saudi Arabia), other countries were pushing for more ambitious targets and the full de-carbonisation of the industry. ... read more
