Breaking News: MUA picket to be dismantled today
Friday, December 15, 2017
Freight & Trade Alliance and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) has been notified that the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU)-led picket at Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) will be dismantled today, Friday 15 December 2017.
In the short-term this represents a much-needed de-escalation.
An interim agreement has been reached between VICT and the MUA.
While the MUA will characterise this as a win for workers, cargo owners and freight forwarders will be left to assess the costs of the illegal industrial action.
We are glad that VICT will be trading again but we are also acutely aware that this event has established a dangerous precedent for future maritime industrial disputes.
