Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) have lodged a submission to the Australian Government in response to consultation on the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Net Zero Framework technical workstreams, including draft guidelines covering Zero and Near Zero (ZNZ) rewards, fuel certification, greenhouse gas fuel intensity (GFI) calculations and related reporting arrangements.
As representatives of freight forwarders, importers and exporters, FTA/APSA have focused on the practical implications of these reforms for Australian supply chains. The submission supports a globally consistent approach to maritime decarbonisation while emphasising the need for transparency in cost recovery, protection of Australia's trade competitiveness, practical and credible fuel certification arrangements, and minimisation of unnecessary compliance burdens on cargo interests.
FTA/APSA also highlighted the importance of ongoing consultation with cargo owners and supply chain participants, noting that while shipping lines and fuel suppliers will be directly regulated, the commercial impacts of the framework will ultimately be felt across Australian import and export supply chains.
