ABC TV - The Business: Australian trade in jeopardy as Middle East "war risk" costs surge

Friday, March 13, 2026

Australian exporters are under growing pressure as escalating conflict in the Middle East drives up war risk surcharges and disrupts freight movements across key global trade routes.

As reported by the ABC, the impacts are being felt not only on trade into the Gulf, but also on broader trade into Europe, with delays and added costs increasing the burden on cargo owners.

Commenting in the coverage, FTA General Manager – Freight Policy & Operations and representative of APSA, Tom Jensen, said the situation is "a massive issue" and "a massive burden on exporters and cargo owners and a massive cost-of-living pressure point as well".
