Productivity Round Table
The Australian Border Force (ABF)
convened a series of high-level meetings last week to shape policy inputs for next month's Productivity Round Table, to be hosted by the Federal Treasurer.
FTA / APSA representatives
contributed to discussions with a focus on several key areas aimed at streamlining trade and improving border efficiency. These included the potential removal of nuisance tariffs, reform of the Australian Trusted Trader program, improved access to border clearance data for industry, earlier risk management to detect and disrupt illegitimate trade, and enhancements to trade-related ICT systems.
To progress this work, the National Committee on Trade Facilitation (NCTF) will hold an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, 30 July 2025, to finalise its position on these initiatives.
The agreed outcomes will be formally presented to the Minister for Home Affairs for consideration ahead of the Productivity Round Table.

New Landside Logistics Manager at DP World Fremantle
Amanda Bradfield
sat down last week with
Samantha Cox
, who recently stepped into the role of Landside Logistics Manager at DP World. With decades of experience under her belt, they spoke about the challenges of changing jobs after long stints, something many of us can relate to. They also discussed in detail terminal operations, trucking complexities, frustrating delays, and the spicy logistics landscape that keeps us all on our toes. It's always great to meet someone who shares the same passion for the industry.
Recruiting the next generation
It was great last week to connect with
Nicole Reynolds
and
Emily Monaghan

Caroline Zalai
and
Paul Zalai
appreciated the opportunity to share insights and explore ideas for attracting the next generation of talent to our sector.

The Loadstar - Opposition to ACCC green light for DP World takeover of Silk Logistics
Australian shippers and forwarders have reacted with disappointment to the country's competition regulators giving the green light to DP World Australia's takeover of container haulage firm Silk Logistics.
"Despite our strong opposition, some industry bodies chose to soften the stance, suggesting an undertaking would be sufficient," said
FTA director Paul Zalai
.
"This lack of a united industry front may have given the regulator an excuse to sidestep the issue". "Even though it acknowledged the deal would reduce competition, it failed to act. The result? A green light for stevedores and global shipping lines to push ahead with their vertical integration ambitions," Mr Zalai added.

AFR - Global freight prices tumble, except for goods shipped to Australia
The Drewry World Container Index, which tracks freight rates for 40-foot containers on the world's most popular shipping routes, has halved over the past 12 months. While the index spiked in early June as
trade tensions between the US and China eased
, it has slid over the past month dropping 5 per cent in the week to July 10 to trade at $US2672 per 40 foot container.
Tom Jensen, General Manager of Freight Policy
at Australia's Freight & Trade Alliance, which represents importers and exporters, said record numbers of new ships were built last year as ocean carriers invested in vessels powered by alternative fuels such as methanol. "But while there are geopolitical issues, the shipping lines will try to keep freight prices – and their margins – higher at every opportunity," Jensen said.
