A BIG WEEK IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL

Shipping Competition Review - the likely repeal of Part X CCA

As a part of bi-lateral engagement with the office of the Federal Treasurer, FTA / APSA have been advised that Part X will be incorporated into a wider review of Australia's competition law as outlined in the Treasurer's media release from 23 August 2023 A more dynamic and competitive economy

Paul Zalai and Sal Milici met with the lead and executive contingent of the competition law review Taskforce. While the review will be progressed over two years, the Taskforce will be providing continuous advice, rather than a formal report, to the Federal Government.

Senator the Hon Murray Watt - Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

Paul Zalai, Sal Milici and Bianca Flint had a tremendous opportunity to have an open discussion with the Minster for Agriculture Murray Watt and senior advisors in terms of current import processing delays. 

The Minister acknowledged much needs to be done, and to his credit the STEPS
initiative will be a valuable starting point for broader reform

Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie - Shadow Minister for Infrastructure

Sal Milici and Paul Zalai met with Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Bridget McKenzie to discuss the recommendations from the Productivity Commission review into Australia's Maritime Logistics System in preparation of this week's Senate Estimate hearings.

Meeting with the Australian Border Force

Sal Milici and Paul Zalai had excellent engagement with the Trusted Trader and Trade Compliance team of Australian Border Force headed up by Commander Asha Rajah-Clarke and Superintendent Martin Moseley - discussions centred on compliance, customs broker and depot licensing and emerging reforms.

Adam Fennessy PSM -  Secretary, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

Our final meeting for this Canberra trip. Bianca Flint and Paul Zalai had the privilege of meeting Adam Fennessy PSM the new Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to discuss short and longer term reforms to meet the dual aims of Biosecurity safeguards and facilitation of legitimate international trade.

Parliamentary Friends of Biosecurity

Paul Zalai and Sal Milici met with Dr Lloyd Klumpp (Inspector General of Biosecurity), Plant Health Australia's CEO Sarah Corcoran and General Manager, Partnerships and Innovation, Dr Lucy Tran-Nguyen and a very special sniffer dog and handler from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry at the annual 'Parliamentary Friends of Biosecurity' event in the courtyard of Parliament House Canberra on 18 October 2023.
