IFAM - Trade Minister response to FTA/APSA advocacy

Friday, February 25, 2022

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) yesterday received a formal response from The Hon Dan Tehan MP (Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment) to our request for an extended budget allocation to continue the International Freight Assistance Mechanism (IFAM) beyond the scheduled termination in mid-2022.

MINISTERIAL RESPONSE

In the absence of having a crystal ball, it is clearly a very difficult predicament for the Federal Government to ascertain whether the opening of our international borders will generate sufficient aircraft belly-space capacity to allow Australian traders to be internationally competitive and to reach key markets.

The world has gone crazy still dealing with the pandemic (hopefully not too many more variants to come) and now significant concern with unrest in Eastern Europe.

In these uncertain times, it is reassuring to note the willingness of the Federal Government to potentially continue IFAM on a needs basis.

FTA / APSA are having further high level Ministerial meetings again next week on international trade matters and will keep members up to date on developments.
