Paul Zalai, head of the peak industry body representing importers, exporters and logistics providers, the Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) said the industry had been rocked by widespread downstream problems caused by a major ransomware attack on Danish logistics giant Maersk in 2017, but most firms had still not done anything to make their systems more resilient. '' Toll would not be the only major provider exposed by the same risk. For whatever reason they got cracked, but I think they were the unlucky ones and I think there would be many others that are just as vulnerable,'' Mr Zalai said. '' The bigger thing that this has exposed is the risk to other logistics providers as well ... We are well aware that many are hosting their own servers and their own technology, they run with a myriad of different systems and are trying to piece them all together. The more complex these systems architecture are, then the greater the risk is for cyber attack.'' He said rampant merger and activity and numerous firms making a '' false economy' ' of running old tech systems into the ground meant well organised cyber criminals could easily run wild.
