JOHN LINES JOINES CONTAINERCHAIN

Melbourne Australia, May 7 2018: Containerchain, creator of cloud-based software solutions for automating and synchronising operations across the landside container logistics industry announced today that industry veteran and outgoing managing director of ANL, John Lines, has joined its Advisory Board in the role of Chairman.

Lines, a recipient of the Order of Australia for services to the maritime sector, brings with him insight and expertise honed over an almost-fifty-year career in shipping. He remains active in the industry and is especially focused on advising both portside and landside logistics stakeholders to face the opportunities and challenges that digitisation of the container shipping supply chain brings.

Tony Paldano, CEO and founder of Containerchain, commented: "I've known John for many years and there are few in the industry as respected as he is - both here in Australia and internationally. His contribution to - and advocacy on behalf of - the industry is unmatched. I'm delighted to have John join us in the capacity of Chairman of the Containerchain Advisory Board as we continue on our path of transforming the efficiency and productivity of the sector."

Mr Lines said: "The industry is facing a pivotal moment as it grapples with the greatest disruption since the invention of the shipping container. Digitisation offers a way for the sector to operate much more profitably and sustainably, effects I've seen first-hand first as a customer of Containerchain and a stakeholder in the industry. I'm excited to be able to offer my services to a dynamic and game-changing business like Containerchain."

Unlocking value across the container logistics supply chain

Transport inefficiencies that start at the terminal gate have a flow-on effect right across the container logistics supply chain, trapping value and depressing profitability for all involved.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

Connecting the community of container depots and terminals, cargo owners, shipping lines, and road transporters, Containerchain solutions support synchronised communication and operational predictability.

Features include real-time paperless tracking, frictionless information exchange, process automation, and optimised asset utilisation - as well as total container movement visibility for more proactive planning. The result is lowered cost of operations and improved profitability for one of the world's most essential industries.

Weekly Market Commentary

The 'Trade Wars' dominated the close of international markets for the week. Asian and European markets took major hits as the prospect of US Tariffs on exports sunk in. The imposition of tariffs will have a massive impact on Asian and European Exporters and markets reflected this. The threats of retaliatory action came thick and fast, but considering many have surpluses with the US and are trade dependent, Trump is in the box seat. He announced that 'Trade wars are good and easy to win'.  ... read more

Yesterday (7 May 2018) ... back in front of the ABC camera from our new Melbourne office

Paul Zalai, the director of peak industry body Freight and Trade Alliance, said rail was vital for trade in Port Botany.

"What we have experienced to date has been a reliance on road in the area with much congestion," he said.

"Rail is going to be a very important part for the trade through Port Botany. Not just our metropolitan sectors, but also to best serve the rural sectors of NSW ... read more

The hidden costs of hand-me-downs

Dales Crisp - FTA / APSA
DCN - Monday 30 April 2018

OVER the course of 2018 global container lines will take delivery of some one million TEU of newbuilding ship capacity, with almost all in the form of Ultra Large Container Vessels of 18,000-22,000 TEU.

Only one trade is physically capable of accommodating these behemoths: Asia-Europe, where consequently supply is once again well exceeding demand.

In what should thus be no surprise to any regular observer, freight rates are now "substantially below" 2017, with some sources claiming offers of as low as US$350/TEU are in the market against "expectations" of US$1500/FEU ... read more
