Award winning app streamlines cargo clearance processes

Monday, July 4, 2016

A mobile application developed by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP), is allowing Australian Border Force (ABF) officers to clear and release air cargo faster and more efficiently.

The eBorderForce app was designed to streamline the processing of air cargo and allow ABF officers to record examinations, make notes and record outcomes in real-time as examinations are done in the field.

eBorderForce also provides increased data security, and reduces both duplication of data entry and the need for printed paper reports, saving officers over 100 hours of paperwork a week.

The decrease in data entry and administration means over 10 per cent more inspections can be carried out and air cargo can be cleared and released back to importers faster.

The app also ensures ABF officers are able to keep more accurate and secure data on the inspections that are carried out.

The concept for the app was born out of the former Australian Customs and Border Protection Service Innovation Programme and was developed in partnership with internal DIBP resources, Microsoft and Microsoft's partner SMS Management & Technology.

SMS Management & Technology recently won a Microsoft Global Partner of the Year Award for their involvement in the project.
